inverter/charger ????????????

I have a 2002 Expedition with a Freedom 458 combi inverter/charger. When plug into shore power it will not charge my house batteries. I ran them down, plugged in the ac cord, turned on the remote switch & nothing. I shut everything down, started the coach engine for 10 minutes, shut it off turned on the inverter & it shows it is charging. Have had this problem before, tired of having to run the engine to be able to use my coach lights, what is going on? I have the manual it says it should charge the batteries, so confused!!!!

Failure to charge appears to be one of the failure modes of the Freedom 458; at least it was for mine. I could usually get it to restart by disconnecting the batteries, waiting a few minutes, then reconnecting. Over the time the problem became more frequent. Eventually, we replaced it with a Magnum MS2813 pure sine wave inverter.

There are circuit breakers built into the 458, one for the charge function and another (one or two) for the inverter output circuits. Try resetting them (they might be on the back of the unit). You can't do it form the remote - use the panel on the 458 itself.

Also, observe the Charge led on the 458's front panel? Is it on or blinking? If it's off, press and hold the Charge pushbutton for 3+ seconds to reactivate it.

Gary:

My Freedom 458 had no such circuit breaker for the charge function, only the two for the output circuits, nor can I find any mention of such a breaker in the user guide which I still have. There is a front panel button that will turn the charge circuits on/off but it is not described as being a breaker.

Thanks for all the input, I checked all the fuses & the breakers were ok, I took off the inverter cover & there is a bad fuse. Hopefully this will do the trick.

Well that did the trick, inverter charging, can't believe they would put the fuse in such a stupid place. I am going to relocate it on the outside of the cover. Thanks again for all the help.
