Explain idle current for me.

I have never heard that term.

My battery levels drop fast when I am unplugged. And the inverter is inverting.

And the engine is not running.

Keep inverter off when hooked up to shore power. Ours had been left on when shore power failed while we were gone. The inverter sucked our house batteries down to zero trying to keep the refrigerator supplied with 120AC. Far better for inverter to be off, refrigerator goes automatically to propane and uses only a trickle of 12V to power the circuit board. Of course if you've got a "residential" refrigerator, you're out of luck.

No-load current draw. My Xantrex 3000W pure sine wave inverter/charger draws <3.0A with the inverter on, according to the manual. At 3A, it would suck 72Ah per day with the inverter enabled. Reality is likely less than that, but it still adds up over time.

My 600Ah battery wouldn't last more than a week at that rate, though again, it's probably not that high. I'll have to measure it one of these days.

Standby current (unit energized, but inverter not enabled) is shown as <.25A, which is still not nothing.

So do you unplug your tv when not watching it? How about the Microwave? Kill power to radio? All of these things use power when turned off but plugged in. Turning off a tool that is made to be on so it is ready when needed makes absolutely no sense to me.
In the big picture there really isn't a right or wrong answer. Do what you want it's your rig no harm no foul either way.

I do the same

No need at to have it running

Creates heat and the fan operates to draw the heat away

I leave the charger on as needed to maintain the batteries

I turn on inverter only when dry camping which is rare, shore power handles everything, if I lose power refrigerator switches to propane.

Thank you very much for that easy to understand description KanzKran.
I appreciate.
