Inverters and oxygen concentrator compatibility

Next week I need to transport my parents-in-law for a 10 odd hour drive. One of them should use (really needs) oxygen during the trip. We will be transporting the oxygen concentrator anyway, so might as well tuck it in the back bathroom and run it back there.

The question is … can I just run it off the inverter, or should I have the generator running continuously to cover the draw? I have no idea whether a concentrator is considered a “high draw” appliance (like a microwave or toaster)….

(I’m not worried about depleting the batteries … the engine will be running near continuously, and we will be running in daylight, and I have 600 watts of solar on the roof. Mostly I am wondering if the inverter might be overtaxed. Anyone here have experience with the ins and outs of running a concentrator on board? )

Almost every 120 volt AC appliance will have a wattage requirement on a label or embossed into its plastic case. Compare the wattage on the O2 concentrater to the wattage on the inverter.

Or get the make and model of the O2 concentrater and look up the wattage.

Possibly in the 200 to 700 watts range

Looks like 125 to 600 watts, depending on flow rate and manufacturer. If it doesn't peg the inverter you age good to go, if it does...genny!

We travel with an oxygen concentrator and it will run off of the inverter versus the generator but some will not run on a modified sine inverter so it is best to confirm what type of inverter you have and, at a minimum, if you have a modified sine inverter try to power the concentrator before making your trip to determine if the inverter will be an option.

We replaced our Magnum modified sine wave inverter with a Magnum pure sine wave inverter this year to prevent any issues.

You always have the generator if the inverter is not an option but a backup is always preferred when it comes to a medical necessary device.

I don’t have current access to the concentrator, so was really just looking for a general idea of their power requirements.

I have a xantrex freedom sw inverter- which is a true sine wave inverter (good point!).

Not sure of the exact model .. but the manual indicates a range of 2000 - 3000W continuous … so if the concentrators pull something like up to 600W, I should be ok. I’ll find a way to check, hopefully ahead of time by having someone look at it before I actually pull in to pick them up…

Thanks all!
