Ironing in Coach

Hope I am making sense here.

When DW is ironing clothes, every time iron turns on the 12 volt lights all flash on then off. Is this normal due to the irons power draw or should I be concerned?

Thanks

Are the lights incandescent or LED? Are they electronically controlled or standard switches?
My rig came with a small ironing board as standard equipment, clipped to the backwall in the closet. After 2 1/2 years of ownership it's never been unclipped to use. In fact I don't know how to unfold it and don't plan on learning.

I'd be concerned. Are you running off an Inverter?

Lights are LED ON standard switches. We are plugged into shore power, not running off inverter. Our coach also came with a small ironing board in wardrobe.

I could see having problems if you had the full house electronic controllers like I have, but not eith the standard switches. Scratching my head as it just doesn't seem reasonable.

Maybe I was wrong with my switch description. The switches are the standard ones in motorhome. Here is a pic of one.

Just some things to try.....

There should be a few outlets in your coach that are NOT run through the inverter. I would locate one and see if the same thing happens when you use that outlet.

Not many people do it, but about once a year or so, you should tighten all of your grounds, especially in your circuit breaker panel. Open the door, remove the cover plate and snug up all the wires.

Make sure the inverter battery cables are also tight.

That looks like a multiplex (digital) witch panel, not a mechanical on/off switch that actually delivers power. It probably sends a signal to a controller board that in turn switches the desired circuit on/off.

An iron sucks a lot of amps @ 120v, so probably causes a dip in the line voltage, at least for a moment. It appears your switch controller reacts to that. And No, it is not normal at all.

The other thing that happens as the iron switches on and line voltage drops is that the inverter/converter/charger reacts with a drop in its output DC voltage at least momentarily. That may affect both the light controller and the lights themselves. The output DC voltage is somewhat proportional to the input 120v line voltage.

Simple solution, don't buy clothes you need to iron.

Gary wins with the correct electrical answer (again)!

The question is why the ~10 amp iron is causing a big line drop unless he is running off the inverter. Even there in pass through mode that is unusual so sounds like a loose connection or similar problem.

The iron is an inductive load and will draw maximum amps as soon as it is plugged in or turned on. This will cause a drop in voltage at the converter which will cause it to shut down temporarily until the voltage rises to sufficient operating voltage to supply 12v. It's basic OHMs law. It would be prudent though to make sure all electrical connection on the shore power side and in the converter.

You might try running a short stout extension cord into the bathroom plug. I'm guessing it is wired to handle hairdryers, curling irons and such which draw similar loads.
