It just keeps leaking

I have a leak at the trap under my kitchen sink. I’ve tried two different sealants and and plumbers tape with no luck. What am I missing?

It’s at the spot where the white sealant is. This picture is flipped sideways. Sorry

You could have a cracked fitting. New P-traps are pretty cheap. Might be worth simply replacing the old one.

If it is a normal P-trap fitting it should not require sealant. As mentioned need to look for a crack or damaged sealing surface.

...those type of sink pipe joints usually have an inner gasket that seals the two pipes--could be missing, torn, or misaligned....

Thanks, I located a plumbing store and I’m going to attempt replacing it.

As others have said, it shouldn't use either sealant or tape. The joint uses a compression washer which is forced to a tight seal as the threaded coupler is tightened down. You probably just need a new washer, but replacing the trap, which should come with a new washer, isn't expensive and makes sure you have all good parts.

….if you plan to replace it--first challenge will be finding ABS vs PVC pipe....

I would look to make sure the sealing gasket is in place. Tension on a joint like that can also make them leak.

You may have the inner gasket in upside down as stated above. It will only seal if it is in correctly.

ABS and PVC both have the same threads. But as you hint, compatibility is always a consideration when replacing anything on a rig.

I see the OP found a replacement and is dry now but wanted to share my experience.

I replaced 2 bathroom sinks and replaced plumbing under my kitchen sink. I found that all the p-trap threaded ends were "backwards" from residential ones. Meaning the nut was on the opposite side of the fitting than was in my RV. I wound up just cutting the existing stub off and gluewelding a new fitting on the wall stub and converting all of it to residential fittings from a big box hardware store. I just used a glue that was compatible with both ABS and PVC. It makes getting replacement parts much easier in the future.
