Jacks up or down?
Do you keep jacks up or down in storage? I have mine on plywood boards under tires with jacks down to keep weight off tires. Wonder if this is good idea.

Perfect IMHO.
Just spray some silicone on the stainless steel surfaces from time to time.

I store with jacks down, it doesn't hurt the system a bit . I worked a career in Heavy Construction with all kinds of hydraulic equipment being stored and it was never a issue to leave the big cranes with outriggers down.
I don't understand the comment about spraying Silicone on Stainless Steel as it can't rust ?

Saw a thread a while back about silicone. Said silicone would build up, attract junk and damage the seals. The rec was to use the same fluid as in the reservoir to moisten a cloth and wipe the rams if they are dusty. Then wipe with a dry cloth. Leaves a very fine film.
Any thoughts?

In my opinion and what I have read and heard, WD-40 will eventually ruin the seals.
Powergear/Kwikee specifically states to not use WD-40. They suggest silicone.
I find it just as easy to carry a quart of Dexron transmission fluid, dampen a rag a little, wipe down the ram, and wipe off any excess with a dry part of the cloth. So far, so good. Dexron is what is in my reservoir so if it doesn't hurt using it there it will not hurt using it on the ram. One thing to consider on any product is if you are in a dusty area you may need to just wipe them a little more often.
I do not store with jacks down. I leave them up. Typically we only store for a couple months then we go somewhere so it's not like you Northern folks that leave it in storage for several months.

I do either one, as my needs dictate. Plus, tire manufacturers recommend using the jacks for long term storage to take some weight off the tires when they sit in one position for a long time. There is no downside to leaving the jacks down as long as the ram is kept reasonable clean and protected from rust (a consideration if parked on the seashore, for example).

When not in use, my coach is left with the jacks up. I've called HWH and Michelin several times about this and their answer has always been the same. Up or down, Michelin tires are okay with either way and HWH is okay with the jacks being down for extended periods of time. The place where the coach sleeps is level.
This is a personal preference decision. There is no right or wrong. Jacks are on a coach for two reasons:
1. level the coach for refer operation
2. stabilize the coach for human comfort
This all started way back in 1978. My coach did not have jacks. It went unused every winter (in very cold up state NY) for 6 months of the year. The tires were fine. Never had any problem with the tires.

All rams are not stainless steel. Some are chrome plated steel and poor chrome at that. Get a scratch in the chrome down to the steel ram and they rust.

Never sprayed anything on our jacks and have never had one leak or work slow. In fact we still have the original return springs on our 2002 with HWH's. I leave them down most of the time, even suspending the front tires completely off the ground for months at a time.
