Kwikee step

Mine stop working. I tested with a multi-tester at the motor leads and got no voltage with the door open and the steps retracted. I closed the door and same results. Before buying a new motor or controller anything else I should test?
Fuses check OK.

You have a fuse for the step switch and step motor more than likely in your Battery Control Center (BCC)

Take the cover off and look at the fuse diagram for the locations.

On my Fleetwood product, the step motor is a 20 amp fuse and the step switch is 3 amps.

One fuse is labeled step motor and the other step ignition and like you mentioned 20 amp and 5 amp. Both are good.

Did you pull the OEM wiring harness connection from the coach going to the motor connection for power?

Also, check the ground wire mounted somewhere underneath and make certain it is not corroded.

Let me see if I have photos.

Tim-

"Kwikee IMGL Step Control Testing Procedure" (link here) is a place to start.

If you aren't already sure which Kwikee step model you own, the "Kwikee Step Identification and Replacement" guide (link here) may help sort that out.

These two and other helpful support documents are at this link.

This is the connection from the coach to the motor controller.

There is a black ground wire off this harness mounted somewhere to the step support or frame you have to look for.....I don't know why I didn't shoot a photo of it, but follow the harness and you will find it.

Check the ground at the motor controller (green) but that's usually not the problem.

Fixing the faulty chassis ground also fixed intermittent operation of my coach's steps... for a time. A controller replacement was the "final" fix.

Let me take a look at Mark's diagnostic procedure and I'll get back.

I tested the motor with a 12 volt battery an it did not work. Ordered a new motor from Amazon.

Just curious, was the motor installed when you tested it?

No, I attached a ground wire to a bolt on the gear box and the hot wire to one of the motor contacts. Nothing happened so I tried the other positive contact and nothing again.

Pull the motor off, 3 bolts, take the cap off, make sure the gears turn, then put it back on and try it. Support the steps so they don't fall on you. Quite often the gears get jammed.

The entire Kwikee Products Service Training Manual helps ID your step model#, has a troubleshooting section and a testing section.
My guess is a poor/missing ground connection, you have two. There should be an inline fuse near the motor too.

Concur with above post, you need to remove the motor to test it. Also, if the gears get jammed, it can reset the controller and you will not get any voltage out of the controller until you open and close the door 7 times. After the 7th time you should get voltage out of the controller, if the controller is good. BTW, you only get voltage for 5 seconds. For testing the motor, I put the positive lead on one wire and the negative on the other, on my motor there were not 2 positive connections as you stated. Also, when testing, try to use 10 gauge wire. I hope this helps. Be careful not to have the steps come down on you, when testing. I called Lippert for help when my steps would not extend. The people that tech support the steps are great.
