Lithium Charge

I Finally went lithium and set up my Zantrex Freedom SW3012 with a custom charge profile. I replaced 6x8D AGMís with 3x300ah Ampere Time batteries (bought on Amazon). My question is do I need to worry about my alternator charging the house batteries with the engine running? I have a 320 amp alternator and I almost always start out to travel with fully charged batteries.

I have read about DC to DC chargers but I would like to stay with my current setup if able

Thanks
Pops

If you start out fully charged, then it may not be a problem. The issue is when the batteries need charged, and the engine is running, the batteries can pull a lot of amps from the alternator, and causing issues. Without knowing what rig you have, it's difficult to determine the proper course of action. But you could simply disconnect the battery isolator, which would stop the alternator current from ever reaching the coach batteries, if you have one.

I personally would not risk the alternator get a magnum smart battery combiner for 100.00 and replace what your connection is between the house and alternator/chassis the SBC limits the amp draw to 30 amps and can be adjusted for battery types via voltage.

Itís not the most technical solution but it works.

You also need to look at the charging from your inverter to the coach standard LA chassis batteryís may not like the 14.5 volts your sending to them. I swapped my chassis for AGM because the charge profile is close to lithium.

Thanks all
I do have a Magna Battery Combiner. The problem is I am not really sure what it does and how it works. I guess I will have to download the manual and make sure it is set the way I need it for the lithium batteries. I didn’t really think about my LA batteries now being charged with the lithium profile from my charger. I know the LA like the float cycle I turned off. I have the charger set to 14.6 for bulk and absorb, how will this effect my coach LA batteries?

I too, have replaced my l16 batteries. I have 2 amperetime 300 ah batteries. The isolator in my rig has a factory setting at what I believe is 12.5 volts. If it reaches 12.5 v , it will charge my house batteries for 60 minutes and then turn off to the house , only charging the chassis batteries. So, I have left it alone. lifepo4 batteries at 12.5 volts are dead, and I dont believe I'll ever travel in that state of charge. Hopefully, 1 hr. of charging will not harm the alternator. Also, 95% of the time I go down the road, I leave the Gen. on, so that would overide the alternator duties. I also have an sw3012

Iíve watched all the videos on charging lithium both in vehicles, of grid applications, and solar. They can take as much amps as you can put in. Iím toying with lithium and no way would I let my charging system that now charges flooded lead acid just go wild charging from my alternator. I donít boondocks much and also donít drive that much. Two trips, 2400 miles each way, home to Mexico each year. Iím thinking of just disconnecting the charge by alternator completely. A couple hours on the generator is probably all I would need while traveling. An overnight hookup would be enough.

If I was traveling a lot and doing overnights I bet I would be fine. I can run the generator for 2-3 hours 10 nights a year easily for the price of an alternator.

Check and see how your chassis batteries are currently charged while on shore power. On mine, it does not charge directly from the charger, but has a small trickle charger under the front by the boost solenoid. Doesnít take much to keep chassis batteries up.
