Louisiana Interstates I20 and I 10
Looking at traveling from Houston to Virginia Beach in May. It has been a few years since I have been over I 10 and I 20 in Louisiana. Last time both roads were in terrible shape. Has anyone traveled over them in the last 3 months and if so, how are they?
Problem with I 40 for me is lack of campgrounds in western Tennessee.
Thanks in advance and regards.

Most of I-20 has been repaved and is MUCH smoother than I-10, IMO. Not sure where you would join up with it, but if W of Shreveport, I suggest you take the by-pass around Shreveport/Bossier City because going thru on I-20 is ROUGH.
Say HI to Loa.....

Maybe try getting off the interestate and seeing some of the countryside. Maybe take I-10 to Beaumont, then TX 12, LA 12, US190 (straight line, with highway numbers changing) to US165 to I20 in Monroe, LA. Most of this should be good road, with a couple of small bits of construction going on for a mile or two. It has been over a year since I last drove parts of this route, though I have no reason to think anything is bad along it.

Great hearing from you Ed. Will do on the Loa item. Would be going up Rt 59 in Texas and then catching I 20. Thanks for the heads up on West of Shreveport.
Hope all is well with you and your wife and hope the Aspire doing well.
The UFO is plugging along with 93K miles on it now. Still love the coach.
Best regards
Ron

Good morning Issac-1
Will keep that in mind as it would be easy for us. This will be one of those bonzi trips for us though.

We traveled I10 in early October from Houston to Florida. It was bad between Houston and Louisiana. The constitution may be finished, but I would check the TDOT and LDOT web sites.

It is not done yet, at least as of a few weeks ago, and shows no sign of being done anytime soon. The main construction area is for about 15 miles just west of Beaumont with narrow lanes and concrete barriers in places. There is also a short 2 mile stretch just west of Lake Charles that should be starting construction now, work was scheduled to start a couple of weeks ago, I have not driven it since then.

We traveled I-20 from Atlanta to Dallas and back last month (January). Highway is in great shape, except for a couple of areas, most notably through Shreveport. Went through Shreveport on the west trip, but used the 220 bypass heading back east - much much better.
Haven't been on I-10 since December of 2016, so can't give any up to date info on that highway.
Regards.
Chuck

Thanks for the input Chuck. Your input has solidified my decision to take I 20 versus I 10 as my son had recently traveled I 10 and said traffic was difficult in some spots.
Best regards and safe travels
Ron

Yes! I don't know anything about I 20 but I do know there is a good amount of construction between Houston and Beaumont. Concrete barriers making for narrower lanes are in place at Winnie and again west of Beaumont. There was a lot of construction going on near Orange but I'm not sure how far along it is or if it's possibly finished by now.
Having said this, it's not hard to drive, especially if you can hit it when there's less traffic.
p.s. We've been having to make trips to Houston from the Beaumont area here lately and have found that US 90 is our favorite way to go. US 90 seamlessly exits off I 10 near the 610 loop. There are slowdowns in towns like Liberty and Dayton but it's an overall more enjoyable ride. Most of it is 4 lane but there is a few miles of 2 lane driving. Distance is about the same but there is no construction to speak of going on at this time on 90.
Edited to say OOOPS! I see that you've figured it out. Oh well, if you do decide to head east on a more southernly route, 90 may be something to look at. Have a safe trip!
