My 02 Alfa SeeYa is the same way. There are two valves UNDER the coach about 2/3 the way back. The run along a cross member there. The are typical gate valves like you have on your yard faucets. In Cold climate, these valves should be wide open. If you travel in extremely hot climate, they should only be slightly open.

I run mine open all the way all the time. I try to avoid driving when the outside temp. is over 100 degrees but I have driven across the desert from Lake Havasu to Sacramento when the outside temp. was over 105 and did not have an over-heating problem.

Even with the valves open all the way, I still use an electric space heater running the gen set or us LP gas and run the furnace.

What is the purpose behind having the valves slightly open if traveling in extremely hot weather?

oh and Roger sorry for misreading your reply as I implied -40 and you said 40 or below..
Oatmeal here again i made a mistake,, I was thinking the tile heat and continuous hot water in the gold,, which isn't even a heat pump anyway... the newer cars i drive I was not comparing to my 62 chevy.. dang thing blew snow drift inside if you had on defrost when starting. or when transferring instantly fogged windshield. I'm sure your cars have that problem solved. My mind has just been reading to fast and has been other places. I'll make sure to read more carefully..

Did not mean to imply all Alfa dash air is no bueno. Should have worded my 2004 Alfa See Ya dash air was very bad. It was what it was and the best it could get was sad and weak. Loved the coach. Would still have it bad dash air and all if 2009 didn’t happen.
