Ice looks like a possibility. Looks like the semi and motorhome possibly got together, they both came to rest at nearly the same spot.

Terrible, There are so many 18 wheelers on the road. Hope and pray they make a full recovery!

No ice here...just a steady drizzle.
Both vehicles hit the bridge supports.
Motorhome hit in the median...Semi hit the outside.

The news story said everyone was out of their vehicles when the first responder arrived - which is great news, as long as the papers reported it correctly.
It amazes me that a MH disintegrated that badly. I've see a couple in salvage yards that were badly damaged after a rollover, but not to the point of virtually coming apart as that one apparently did.

Good news.. Everybody lived and the RVers should make a full recovery in every sense of the word.
And from the write up (Semi hit 'em in the rear) not too many ways that could be the RVers fault.. HOWEVER IT IS POSSIBLE... (I won't speculate as to how here but I do know of a freeway accident where it was indeed the vehicle in front that was at fault.... My Parish Priest was in the other car, and injured.. I delivered a copy of the crash report to him since my "office" took it)

I wonder if the semi-drive was dozing off and wondered into their lane. Having dealt with over the road drivers the last 20 years before I retired, that time of night is when they are rushing to get to their appointment...Over the years there is a lot of pressure for drivers to push the limits, for the trucking firms to make money. I used to see a lot of drivers walking into our warehouse absolutely drained trying to make their appointment at night.
I'm glad to hear the family all made it out alive. There is not much left of their RV...

Pictures like that always make you realize how vulnerable we really are on he highways. Glad to hear no one was badly injured. Could have been much worse looking at those pictures.

Some are actually still made well enough to sustain quite an impact. But that comes with a higher price too!

One of the DW's primary concerns was "what happens in an accident?" as we moved to our Class A. We often have grandchildren with us and each is belted in. Seeing the mess this motorhome was in and then reading that "everyone was out of their vehicles when the first responder arrived" made our day. The coach can be replaced but not the lives of our loved ones.
Happy New Years to all.
