In Oregon, I just licensed a 2004 30' Sightseer-cost was $383 for 2 yrs. which included a $77 transfer fee for transferring title from Calif.

IIRC, our Minnesota motor home tags will be around $100 this year. Each year it goes down by a few dollars. This is for a MY2000, 20500# chassis.

I'm with offthewall on this one, I'm a total newb when it comes to vehicle registration policy and how gov't decides what people pay on this stuff, or the logic behind it - wait, did i put logic and gov't policy in the same sentence? And sorry, no offense to anyone working in gov't at any level, I just see some of the prices being mentioned for LICENSE REGISTRATION and it absolutely boggles my mind!! Can anyone at least shed some sense of explanation for the logic behind the states with the really pricey tag registration?? maybe if i knew the "why" it would help appease the sticker shock (but i doubt it)

Well, in California the registration for cars and motorhomes is based on the selling price (I'm not sure if it's the actual price you paid, or MSRP on new units) but they get 2% of the price, and it drops 10% per year for 10 years, then it stops dropping. For used units it's based on the actual price you report to the DMV.

Pickup trucks, cargo vans, and larger trucks also have a weight fee associated with them - if the vehicle has a GVWR under 15,000 lbs (if I recall) then the weight fee is based on the unladen weight of the vehicle, as reported by the manufacturer. Once you go over 15,000 lbs GVWR then the weight fee is based on either the GVWR or GCWR, the owner gets to choose which one to use.

Clearly a revenue source. Some states charge high fees for the registration and tags where some states charge a personal property tax and have a much lower reg and tags. Here in SC as an example we have the personal property tax for most vehicles which is based on the value of the car and is reduced as the vehicle ages. This can be quite expensive. The tags on the other hand are less than $50. RV's qualify as a second home and taxed at a much lower rate but can still be pricey.

What they use this revenue for is anyone's guess but I suspect it is to pay for the highway patrol and other related services.

Tags are cheap, it's the $7200/ year personal property tax in MO. '06 Essex.(Not counting the $35,000 sales tax when bought new).

Florida has no personal property tax.

$2500?!?! for colorado?? Is that for any RV?? or is it weight based or what?

NO personel property tax in Ohio either.

Perry, the property tax on your 06 rig is $7,200??? OUCH guess i'll be moving! yuck! ha, course I did look up what an Essex is like, pretty snazzy rig! much snazzier than I'd ever have certainly.
Is that tax deductible at all? What if someone is full timing in the rig, so thus its their "home"?
