DD an 2 GK's live in Punta Gorda we live in central OH. So we go there a lot. We have two way to travel to see them down I-75 or I-77 to I-95 and across FL from Jacksonville.
We have gotten to the point if headed south on I-75 we plan a 6 pm stop north of Atlanta beltway by about 1/2 hour. We spend the night and get up bright and early and hit the beltway on the west side around 6:15 AM. Very light traffic. I like to fuel up between Atlanta and Macon.
Normally head back the other way up through Jacksonville. For us the difference is about 20 miles. Through Atlanta traffic or through WV with lots of mountains of 6 to 7+% grade.

I make it a habit not to drive thru any large cities. I plan ahead and fine roads around the city. My wife and I enjoy not having to deal with the unpredictable traffic of the big cities. We also enjoy sometimes finding cool things to see as we pass thru the smaller towns. A lot more relaxing

Avoid Atlanta if possible and drive
For anyone planning to travel through Atlanta, don't unless you need to stop in the city. The 285 beltway runs both north and south around the city and either is good to take if you are traveling further north or south of Atlanta. Be mindful of traffic. Try to avoid travel during high traffic hours. Keep an eye out for people in a hurry and not driving safely. Once upon a time there were two or three lanes through Atlanta. As a part of the state adding travel lanes they made the lanes less wide. Trucks are banned downtown unless making deliveries in the city and there isn't enough room to drive an RV defensively and there are almost no shoulders. . I lived in the Atlanta area for a few decades and I try to avoid the city if I don't need to stop. Driving on 285 to bypass the city is a bit longer but it is also faster.

I would rather have a colonoscopy than drive my motorhome through Atlanta. When going north from home in Florida I try my best to avoid Atlanta even if it adds 50 miles to my trip. I am just getting to old to deal with all of the Non Driver fools there.

I just came through Atlanta today (Thursday), about 2:30 pm. I didn’t encounter any construction at all, believe it or not! It was before rush hour traffic (which you’ll enjoy, plus you’ll come through on a Sunday, which may help with less traffic!). Roads are clearly marked on the roadway itself, and I had no problems at all! (37 foot rig, no tow). Good luck!!

Atlanta traffic
All: I just brought up Atlanta on my Google maps and turned on the satellite imaging and what's really strange is there are no vehicles, aka traffic! I'm not sure when this was taken but it's weird. I plan on driving thru next month and wanted to follow I75 just to see its path, exits, and lanes. How is this possible?

I try to go through Atlanta at least around 8 pm. Or later. Never have had any problems doing that with very low traffic. Remember no semis can go through Atlanta unless they have a stop inside the city. By passes has all the semi traffic. I have 44ft Monaco Diplomat als pull full size pickup

I've driven thru Atlanta many times but usually it's very late or when traffic is as minimal as possible. Other than that, drive the speed limit and give yourself plenty of time to lane change. They come upon you fairly fast so just relax and take your time. You should be fine

Take I285 west, middle lane, adjust speed to that of the trucks and cruise on through, a pain but doable!

I've stopped going through Atlanta to get from St Louis to Florida and now go through Memphis and get on I-22 across towards Birmingham. The reason I gave up on Atlanta was climbing the mountain at Chattanooga was a hassle I didn't need and I had to change lanes going through Atlanta way too much. If I could have stayed in one lane to get through I'd have been alright but if you put on your turn signal to change lanes, the drivers always blocked me. I found they were pretty consistent in there attempts to block me. That was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I'm much happier with the alternative route. Lately I've avoided Birmingham because of how rough I-65 was through there. I get off I-22 and head south through Tuscaloosa to catch US-82 into Montgomery and cross I-65 to get to US-231 to Dothan. Works for me and keeps me from blowing my top in frustration using the other routes.
