If you have an exhaust brake, the transmission will downshift itself, so just occasional hard braking will be needed to keep you from from going too fast.

What no one has mentioned is UPHILL. Momentum is the key to getting up hills, and if there is a line of semis, one will surely try to pass you and then after pulling in front...slow down. If you were going up a 6% grade at 45, you will now be forced to follow them at their speed as your gas pedal is already on the floor. You will not have any extra power left to pass. Suck it up, as this happens over and over!

If you have an exhaust brake, Check to make sure it is working, not just the transmission down shifting. Lots of them are rusted in place from lack of use.

If yours is the same as mine!
Put transmission in 2nd gear step down on accelerator all the way.
Let off to see if exhaust brake is actually working.
You will feel it!
You must be over 15 miles per hour!

Exhaust brake shuts off at 15 MPH!
