Move microwave fan exhaust to the outside

I do not like the microwave exhaust fan recycling what I suck off the stovetop back into the RV. Is there an approved solution to redirect the microwave fan exhaust to the outside? I have a 2025 London Aire. Thank you.

Maybe not having the range hood, microwave vented to the outside is considered OK not having a gas stove. The microwave itself is likely convertible and was actually designed for outside venting. They are usually designed for rear direct to wall or top discharge into ductwork. You need to find the parts to convert it back to vented which includes a flap damper and then a suitable wall vent and do the drilling and whatever to get it mounted. You will probably want the vent painted to match the exterior.

Perhaps give Newmar a call and explain what you want done. Maybe they can suggest what to do, and a certified Newmar service center to do the work.

What about the roof vent, it's there waiting for something to do, no mods necessary to a brand new RV.

With a newer motorcoach, first place I would seek advice is from manufacturer, better for them to perform any modification requiring cutting into one of your sidewalls.

We use one of the three powered roof vent fans that the factory installed, the vent fan above our convection microwave and stove exhausts fumes & smoke with ease.

Newmar offered the exterior vent as a "special". If inclined, you could have them add it at the factory. If you intend to go back for repairs, schedule in the vent addition.

We just had this done with the installation of a new microwave. The only extra part needed was the through-wall vent and hood. I wasn't brave enough to cut through the wall myself and had a very competent RV service center do the work, including mounting the microwave -- +/- $800. I wouldn't have a new through-roof vent constructed, creating another leak hazard and requiring additional carpenter work on the cabinetry.

Changed ours to a side vent. The flapper is part of the outside plastic part I bought.

the plastic flapper has/had a lever to lock it closed but to get to the height required a stool. Using a couple of magnets solved the issue. It stays closed while traveling and then pops open when the fan is on.

Cutting through the wall was a bit of a knuckle biter of course and was done with very careful enlargements. Glad I didn't just go to it because there was a vertical beam that would have been compromised.

Didn't occur to me that the flap might stay open. YC1, would you please describe the magnets and their source? Must be weak to allow air flow to overpower them.

Rare Earth magnet about 3/4 inch in diameter. Had to use a matching disc with the magnet. The rare earth magnet is the thick part and has to pull through the plastic flapper which is probably 1/8 inch thick. The fan is quite powerful and pops it open easily.

Thanks for the explanation. Pulling through plastic makes it make sense. I've got a metal vent.

I don't understand why a manufacturer would not vent to the outside. Doesn't make sense. Our 2nd motorhome, 05 Holiday Rambler, just blew back into the RV above the microwave. I guess they thought a fantastic fan was the answer. NO, I hated it. I was happy the replacement 2018 Tiffin had an outside vent, just like the old class C we had before the HR. Good luck with the hole cutting. It's on the list of must haves for the next one.
