MT registration

Anyone else have a major increase in their Montana registration fees? Last year our fee WENT UP $800 and we are told it will be $800 additional every year for the next 10 years! That's pretty much wiped out all the savings we planned on by establishing an LLC in Montana. Comments?

The 2017 Montna legislature changed the fees for higher end RVs and cars.

Here's the applicable code for registering a MH in Montana:

https://leg.mt.gov/bills/mca/title_0...0030-0210.html

(7) (a) Except as provided in subsection (7)(c), the annual registration fee for a motor home, based on the age of the motor home, is as follows:
(i) less than 2 years old, $282.50;
(ii) 2 years old and less than 5 years old, $224.25;
(iii) 5 years old and less than 8 years old, $132.50; and
(iv) 8 years old and older, $97.50.
(b) The owner of a motor home that is 11 years old or older and that is subject to the registration fee under this section may permanently register the motor home upon payment of:
(i) a one-time registration fee of $237.50;
(ii) unless a new set of license plates is being issued, an insurance verification fee of $5, which must be deposited in the account established under 61-6-158;
(iii) if applicable, five times the renewal fees for personalized license plates under 61-3-406; and
(iv) if applicable, the donation fee for a generic specialty license plate under 61-3-480 or a collegiate license plate under 61-3-465.
(c) For a motor home with a manufacturer's suggested retail price of more than $300,000 that is 10 years old or less, the annual registration fee is the amount provided in subsection (7)(a) plus $800.

Montana decided it was time to cash in on those expensive rigs titled in Montana LLC's. It was only a matter of time before they got the idea that there was a cash trove laying out there.

OP, the $1000/year for the next 9 years is still less than the sales tax you did not pay on your 2017 Diplomat assuming as part timers you can win the non resident test when AZ questions your MT plates. Hope AZ does not monitor these threads and your MT plates are not easily seen when in storage.

Might want to delete your personal info on here and cover the MT plates.

Whoa! This is really disturbing to us. When we went full-timing in our (relative) youth, the first time, we used an LLC in Montana to register our fifth wheel. Now we plan to buy a used Newmar Dutch Star, and we hope to use the same idea--register as an LLC in Montana. Will our new fees be $282.50 PLUS $800? And will that continue or increase over the next 10 years?

It depends on the cost and age of the RV if you buy used. You need to do some research. Maybe check out South Dakota if you are a full timer.

Yes - if it is less than 2 yrs old and the MSRP is over $300k, you will pay the $282.50 + $800. Read Post #2 - the law seems pretty clear. The $282 drops as you pass 2 yrs and again at 5 yrs. The $800 remains each year for the entire period it is less than 10 yrs old with an original MSRP over $300K.
