Find an auto parts store with a parking lot that you can get the coach in and out of is the right idea. That way they can test it without having to take it out.
Even better, find one that will install the batteries for free. That way THEY can wrestle the monsters in and out, and you can just watch and say things like 'be careful there'.

That's what I did when the house batteries on mine needed replacing.

I've been doing so searching and it looks like O'Reillys has the best deal. That 8D class looks like the right one, but I will check the dimensions and terminal placement to be sure.

Take a bunch of pictures BEFORE anybody removes anything.

Thanks for the reminder but this being a single battery it won't be a problem!

Maybe to late but in the past I changed my large batteries to 2 group C31 just to make it easier to handle. Usually get the AGMs' from Sams for less than 200 each. I think the 8 weighted a bit over 160 pounds and the conversion just takes two short cables

Current coach came with two C31's so no need to update it

I can’t help you with your problem because I have a different MH but I’ll post here anyway. A good move would be to get rid of the 8D and go with two AGM from sams. $179 each and lots of power.

Keep it between the ditches.. and upright. after 33000 post you must know what to do. LOL

Sounds like your battery is toast Joe, I have found the best deal on batteries at Batteries Plus, I believe that if you take it there they can check it for you, the BP stores here in Alaska stock Duracell chassis and house batteries and the employees are friendly and knowledgeable. I would agree that going to group 31 batteries might be a good idea and BP can help you with the swap advise.

I took the MH to O'Reillys Auto Parts yesterday to get the battery tested. When I pulled out the tray the battery was very hot and steam was coming out of every fill port! The guy tested it and naturally it was bad.

They had a 1400 CCA battery for $229 and he gave me a military discount which brought it down to $206 plus tax. It will be in today and they will install it at no charge!

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to check the alternator's output just to make sure it's not overcharging. I have encountered several times over the many years involved in aircraft and vehicle maintenance where technicians quit after fixing the result of a malfunction without further troubleshooting to find the less apparent underlying cause of the malfunction.
I rely heavily on my ScanGaugeD to monitor alternator output continuously along with all the other parameters it monitors.

I would definitely check the charging after installing the new battery. I was guessing that the old battery was bad and so the alternator was trying to bring it back by charging at a high rate, which the old battery couldn't handle, thus the smoke and heat.

Take it back to O'Reilly, they can easily come out to the parking lot and check your engine's alternator output and make sure it is properly charging the battery for free.

If you purchase new battery, check with Sams Club, I just today replaced my 8D battery. Cost was $199.00. I would recommend you go with a 1400cca, that's what my specs call for. I have a 2002 Windsor. Battery weights 130 lbs.
