Need recommendations for portable tire inflation systems

I'm running Michelin 235/80R 22.5 XRV Large tires on a 2015 34' Fleetwood Bounder requiring inflation to 90PSI

I purchased a Viair 40047 400P-RV Automatic Portable Compressor Kit in 2016 and could not get it to make headway over a 10 minute period to inflate a low tire to 90 PSI.

In 2018, I purchased a Craftsman 1.2 Gallon AirBoss™ Oil-Free Air Compressor and Hose Kit from Sears and the air hose rotted out in my storage bay.

Can anyone offer advice on a RELIABLE portable air compressor?

Thanks

The one you bought is supposed to do it, did you call them? I have a Viair 450 mounted under my truck with a 2.5 gallon reserve tank and it does the job although not as fast as you'd hope and I only air to 75-80 PSI on light truck tires. The tank does help to get a quick head start on the first tire. My 450 has a claimed 100% duty cycle but in reading up it appears like they mean one hour then it needs rest.
Sounds like you are looking for high volume as opposed to reliability which may be tough to find in a 12 volt portable unit, just can't be done quickly without a tank reserve and will be a slow process.
Have you thought about just replacing the hose on your Craftsman?

We use this one and it works very well, although I would suggest replacing the stock hose with a 50' Flexzilla hose.

Check out California Air Systems. They work on, don't count on more than 115 psi but itll handle 90 easily. Main thing is, they are soooo quiet.

I have the same 400P-RV and it works fine for me airing my 315/80-22.5 tires to 120psi. How low were your tires? Generally I only need to add 5-10psi

A tire is considered “flat” if it’s 20% low on air for the load carried…..if it was that low, you probably should have it inspected, and/or replaced.

This is what I carry and have used it several times. It's quiet, lightweight and doesn't take up too much space in my storage bin.

It used to $129 and I got it on sale for $99 but prices have shot up on everything the past several months.

I picked up a compressor at Menards that will go to 150psi. Just carry it to the tire and plug into an extension cord from the generator. It tops off 120 psi tires fairly quick.

I’ve got the 450-p RV. Lower cfm than the 400 but longer duty cycle. On 315 80 22.5’s I can go from 85 to 120 PSI (air up my rears for winter storage) without too much time.

Maybe there’s something wrong with your unit - also, I recall another thread and a poster mentioned they didn’t realize there was plastic covering the air intake filter. Might be worth a look to see if there’s an obstruction there. It would be a shame to spend all that money and just have to replace it!

Best of luck!

I have the same compressor, also with a 50-foot Flexilla hose.

It's portable- not too heavy and not too large. If I need air when on the road I have to run the generator to make the 120VAC.

I have used the compressor on 19.5-inch tires to 100 psi. It may (or may not) work fine for your 22.5-inch tires.

If you really want a higher cfm on board unit that runs on 12 volts and not on a budget you could get one of the dual compressor systems and mount a tank underneath.

This what I purchased from HD. They periodically have it on sale for $99.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-6...50HB/303379052

I then went to HF and purchased the following which I put on a slip mount near the compressor. Cost @$60

After adding the necessary fittings, it works great. Don't have to run the motorhome to air up the tires and when not on shore power, I just run the generator.

Two things I’ve noticed with my Viair. You get more punch if you have your engine running and I try to use a clip on air chuck. That way you don’t lose air in the process.
