Need someone to make sure I'm not getting senile
Have workhorse W22 I had it in the shop for brakes (again) Had a smell of rubber on back right side, turns out caliper was really really hot. They found nothing Anyway got home lifted rear off the ground to work on it. Had park brake set, yet rear tires turn. Isn't the park brake suppose to lock up the back wheels?

Yes, The cable should be hooked to the rear brakes. Makes you wonder what happened, sounds like they hung up.

No, a park brake is just that......a brake to hold the unit in place when you are parked. It is a safety mechanism, not an emergency brake.

Hi,
The parking brake on your Workhorse is NOT on the rear wheels but on the drive shaft. If you look closwely you will see it as a big drum around the driveshaft.

If you would have lifted only one wheel, it would not have turned. With both wheels off the ground, you are turning the differential and would have seen the other wheel going in the opposite direction.

It's a long story but I accidently left my parking brake applied about a quarter of the way down and drove for a few miles before I discovered it---the result was over heated front brakes, rear were fine---so if the parking brake works off the drive shaft what gives?

What makes you think you over heated the front brakes? The front disks have nothing at all to do with the drum brake on your drive shaft.

The 300 degrees on the thermometer I used to see how hot they were and the smell from the front brakes (I know that smell very well---unmistakable)----rears were about 90 degrees when I stopped, perfectly normal.
I thought for sure the parking brake was either the rears or the drive shaft but on my rig it applied the front brakes---no doubt about it. Knock me over with a feather.

Other that air brake systems I don't know of any system that applies the parking brake to the front wheels. On the other point raised by the OP, other than an air brake system (and possibly not even one of those) is strong enough to overcome the power system.

Never the less my experience was leaving the parking brake applied about one quarter of the way down and driving unaware for about five miles then stopping when I smell brakes over heated and to my amazement when I checked it was the front brakes over heated. Rear brakes were fine and the drive shaft? I have no idea what it was doing? Front brakes honest.
