New (To Us) MH Systems Eval

Just started clean-out and checkup of water systems, starting with rinsing out the hot water tank. Though what came out was initially a bit cloudy, it cleared up quickly, meaning whoever last used it, cleaned it out well. And no leaks so far...gaa-roovy!

One interesting thing...the water was pretty toasty. I still don't have the house batteries hooked up; so I guess the heater can run off the chassis 12v system.

Is this usually the case? What other house systems run off the chassis power?

If you have an inverter and it's on everything will run off the batteries

No, the WH needs 120VAC or LPG to operate. It does need 12VDC but that's not what does the heating.

I suspect your inverter was working!

If you don't have house batteries in, then you most likely have a recirculating system from the Motor radiator, heats the hotwater tank with the motor . The electric or gas will not run without 12 volt and usually that is limited to the house batteries. Crazy thing is, it could have a connection to the start batteries. One never says never on a MH.

Interesting...if that's the case (heater loop thru water tank), hats off to the joes at HR.

Gonna try to get the propane tank verified/vetted next. Won't fill it until the house batteries are in and no magic smoke is seen exiting the vehicle. so far, this old titan has been surprising me with what good shape it's in for its age. Fingers crossed!

Sorry for the long delay...a few updates.

Propane tank still good; still has PROPANE it it, and the folks at Farmer's Co-op Propane yard redid the connector from the tank to the regulator (which checked out...wow!). Had to replace the O-ring in the fill connector, but put another 5 gals in there...no problem.

The house batteries were replaced and wired in with some brand-spankers new cabling; nothing sparked or blew up when I switched on the mains and switched on the inverter/converter. Amazing. The convection microwave works, the Dometic fridge works in electric mode (haven't gone through the gas systems yet; that's a future adventure), and the house lights turned on...well, at least the ones with good bulbs did.

Getting new feet and springs to replace the missing ones on the front jacks next, then concentrating on the genset. So far, my appreciation and amazement at old Holiday Rambler MHs hasn't hit a hiccup. Even when something needs to be replaced, it's been minor in cost and easy to do. I guess there's something to that 'first love' thing after all, eh?
