No backup lights on RV

I just bought a 2014 Winnebago Vista and noticed the backup camera wasn’t engaging when I put the transmission in reverse. If I turn on the monitor the rear view camera functions as do the 2 side view cameras. The side view cameras operate properly when the signal lights are engaged.

I checked further and found all the connections in the dash to be secure. I checked all the fuses and found the backup circuit fuses were fine.

I then decided to see if my reverse lights activated when I shifted the transmission into reverse and they did not activate.

So after doing a little research I found that my transmission is a ford TorqShift 5-spd automatic with the V10 engine. The transmission has worked fine so far but all I really did was drive it home from where it was purchased about 10 miles from my house.

I’m left wondering if this may be an issue with the transmission range sensor as all the power seems to be intact as far as fuses and wiring.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On the transmission where the shift linkage is connected to the transmission will be the reverse switch... it functions in one of two ways... first its a mechanical switch inside the transmission so when the linkage moves a button is pressed on the switch and contact is made....

If the switch has only one wire connected to the switch than it grounds that wire in reverse and someplace on the vehicle a relay trips and turns on the backup lights and the camera...

If that switch has two wires than it makes contact across those terminals... usually one terminal is 12V+ from the battery, though the fuse panel, through the engine start switch, to the back up light switch and than to both the rear lights and I assume a trigger wire in the rear view camera at the back of the coach.
Often these wires are in a place where nothing but dirt my be the problem... or someone might have power washed under the vehicle and washed the connections loose.... or the switch is bad...
First identify how it works... and than test what's not working... I'm guessing, dirt, and loose wires first, bad switch second and finally a problem inside the transmission not pushing the switch...

Unfortunately the newer torqshift transmissions appear to have the transmission range sensor mounted inside the pan. There is no reverse switch on the exterior of the unit. That would be too easy. Found a schematic online that shows this. There is definitely no sensor at the shifter. That would be my last resort to go in there. Going to check and trace all the lines possible again and see what I missed. All the connections to the transmission are to sensors that correspond to the diagram I was looking at. I did check all of those connections and they are all good.

Perhaps the attached diagram will help.

Thanks. The diagram was very helpful to narrow down my search. Once I established the contact was closing I knew the switch wasn’t the problem. As you can see by the attached diagram the culprit was between the relay and fuse box. Very well concealed. Nice feeling to find itClick image for larger version
