No Cold 1200 Can I cut it in Half to get it out of the Coach?

No Cold 1200 Can I cut it in Half to get it out of the Coach?

Yes It falls under the Stupid Question Category!

Got the norcold out of the wall - now need to get it out of the Coach - My Simple little brain says if I cut it in Two I could carry it out without any help. ....

Looking to see if anyone has tried it - Just insulation right?...

Tubes only are going through the back Right?...

Thought is to create two 12" pieces that I could hump out the Door. Sawzall will do it in just a few minutes.

What do you think?...

TIA,

I had a 600 series Norcold that died last year. Didn't have to cut it to get it out the door but did cut it up to fit in the trash bin. Scrap metal guy took the cooling unit. Sawzall made quick work of it but it's filled with styrofoam in the walls which can get a bit messy. Remove the cooling unit off the back and take the doors off. Make the smallest cut necessary, while inside the coach, that will get the fridge out. Less mess. Sheet metal exterior and plastic interior walls.

To get the cooling unit off just start taking fasteners off the back plus whatever is in the freezer holding the cold plate and the fridge holding the fins in place. Also all the electrical stuff and gas lines. Without the doors and cooling unit off mine fit out the door on my gas coach strapped to a dolly.

If the cooling unit is still intact just be careful not to comprise it while inside the coach. You may think you know what ammonia smells like but the stuff in the piping is about 100 times stronger than anything a consumer might have access too.

You should be able to pull the cooling coils off the back of the unit and move them out the door. Then cut the box up. If you cut the cooling coil you will need to deal with the cooling fluid.

Just don't cut into the ammonia tubes. But, if you cut the old one in half and successfully get it out of your coach, you're probably going to replace it with a like unit. So the question is, how do you plan on getting the new unit into the coach??

By the way, many RV specialists can totally rebuild your refrigerator right in the coach.

LJowdy, that was my thought process as well. I think I'd see if a new cooling coil unit was available first. Probably cheaper and you have to remove the frig anyway.

TIA,

If the box and doors are in reasonably good condition, there is a value to someone that would rebuild it. Many prefer the absorption type fridge because they dry camp alot and prefer to use the propane vs the generator to keep a residential fridge cool.

If you're going to replace it, I would try to get it out without damaging it and sell it on craigs list.

Lot's of help -

Doors are gone as is everything inside to the - DUMP.

So salvage is out.

Will see if I can unhook from the rear works first, then if I can, fit it out the door?

Two issues, weight and Bulk Size - this is a One Man (Old Man) Show till I get everything sized for the Samsung - then it will likely slide in the window - be reassembled and set in Place.

My main concern was to be sure no lines were running through the Sides and in the Insulation.

So Thanks for all the "Encouragement"

When I get it all done will try to put something together with a few images.

Thanks Again to all,

There are no lines to the inside of the cabinet. All of the cooling unit fits onto the back with a few screws. There are several bolts inside the freezer compartment that go through into the cooling unit to hold it in place. As mentioned, don't cut the cooling tubes. There will be a lot of ammonia spewing out if you do.

cut it vertically. slice it in half top to bottom so you avoid the cooling lines.

The new unit, just cut it in half, but be careful as you will need to put it back together once you get it inside your RV so do not throw anything away.[emoji3]

Do you have a recommendation for the GLUE to USE? ......

thinking a tube of Drywall glue might work??????????

The DW will not be happy if it does not look Really GOOD!.....

Might use the Table saw for the cut so it will be STRAIGHT!

Thanks For the HELP, ..........

If you take the doors off and the cooling unit off the back that is most of the weight. The rest of it is just an insulated box that should fit through the door and be very manageable weight wise.

As you planned to install a Samsung, which will have to go through a window, you might want to move the Norcold out through the window in one piece at the same time.

However, if you want to move it out through the front entrance, you can cut the cooling unit off as how I did it.

At the time, I had already known that my new unit would come in from the door. After pulling NDR1292 out of the cell, I found out that it was very hard to remove the cooling unit off the box. I used a hand saw to cut only two metal tubes (do not use power saw!). Yes, the ammonia came out and dispersed into air. With windows open, there was no smell on the 2nd day (I didn't sleep overnight inside).

The rest was easy. (I have a blog on the fridge install if you are interested in the details).

Good luck and have fun!
