Oil change and fuel filter change interval low mileage

Just wondering when others would change their oil and fuel filters after one year but only 700 miles. I'm guessing most would change everything based on the one year?

I wouldn't change the fuel filters at 700 mi!

I would not, unless the trips you made were short. As long as you fully warmed up the engine each time. You could have it tested and see if you need to change it.

The truth of the matter is that I actually had the oil and all filters changed 2.5 years ago and was thinking I need to get this coach serviced soon. Then I checked the mileage and I have only driven 700 miles.... the manual says 15,000 miles or annually. Would you change the oil based on the time and not the fuel filters? Or perhaps just wait for the next big trip? I had the coach out for a good exercise today and plan on one more 100 mile drive before it sits in April for 6 months. So the next big drive for the coach will be next Dec if we decide to take it to Florida.

I put between 4000 and 8000 miles per year on my coach. I change the oil every April and the fuel filters every other year.

Why would you dispute what the manual suggest if it says to change the oil annually? The manufacture engineers have done extensive testing on their engines and should know what is best for the engine health. It dosen't make sense when people try to save a few $$'s on a major item like a expensive diesel engine. Can't you afford a oil change, if not then save some $$ and learn to DIYS. That would be a better option.

A oil sample would confirm it’s as good as “new” oil, oil that’s million of years old.

With that little mileage , I wouldn't bother changing the oil and filters every year as long as all of the trips have been long enough for the engine to fully reach operating temperature. With low mileage , I change mine every 2 or 3 years when the mileage approaches 2000 miles. I use the same schedule for my heavy equipment that may sit for 8 months or more .

Funny how some folks spend $50 -$500K on a rig - then buy the cheapest tires, extend the service beyond recommendation, don't replace failed items etc. etc.

I didn't buy my MH to save money nor to willingly void any warranty coverage or to enjoy being stuck on the side of the road with a potentially expensive repair.

But, as I've said before, each of us can use our equipment the way we want. And, I'll continue to hope that we all get to enjoy miles of smiles.

IMHO, The reason a low mileage oil change is sometimes dictated is due to the contaminates and acids introduced on short cycle startups and shutdowns especially when the engine and exhaust does not get to operating temperature long enough to cook off the moisture and heat up all of the components. If this is not the case, I wouldn't be concerned about the oil.

There could be an argument made about the filter age since you stated it has been on for 2.5 years and the fact that if you do not change it now it could be there for another 2.5 years......

Yup.

Filters scare me after reading about an old one falling apart and getting sucked into a turbo - resulting in big buck$. Also, I believe (on my Cummins) they have a predetermined unopened shelf life (4 years, generally for air/oil/fuel filters after that, some of the banding holding them together starts to deteriorate), which is shortened when opened and installed.
