Oil change interval - really!!!!

This might just cause so to rethink when they Change the Oil. -

https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/r/...berid=25036710

Like a good Murder Mystery the last chapter/paragraph give the answer. -

Good read, is actually longer than even I normally go now. Back when I drove 100K a year I would go 25 K between oil changes and get a new car every other year. -

Now that I'm a Lot older and driving much Less I've been using 11K as the number - easy to know - 11 - 22 - 33 - 44........easy to know when it's time. -

So what do you think - this is mainly for the Gas Toads - not the DP's.

Follow mfr's recommendations. Or sooner than that. Also depends on your driving conditions. Short city driving trips are much worse on the oil getting dirtier and contaminated than longer freeway trips. I change my own oil, so for me it is cheap insurance to change more often than mfr recommends; I typically just do every 5K since most driving is around town now. Full synthetics can go longer intervals than conventional oils. There is never full agreement on these topics, so just do what you want with your vehicle.

My book says annually, so that's what I do since I only put about 5000 miles on each year.

If you want any warranty to be honored, stick to the manufacturer's schedule and keep receipts for the oil change, filter changes, etc.

Good previous comments ,,, there is never full agreements on oil change intervals,,,, read your mfgr's recommendations,,,, oil changes are cheap insurance. Read your owners manual closely about the use you give the vehicle and see how the interval requirements differ.
Want a 300,000 mile engine? treat it good !

I've changed my auto oil at the recommended time frames my entire life. I tried to impress that on my two married daughters. My oldest daughter bought a new Kia with a 100K engine warranty. At 98500 miles, the motor blew, they were a young family with not much money. I figured Kia would not honor the warranty. Luckily, my daughter had every oil change done on time. Kia had no argument and replaced the engine.

So.....if you're under warranty, I would closely follow the manufacturer's guidelines.

I would follow the manufacturers recommendations for the conditions you drive the vehicle in or change the oil more often. Never less often. I never change the oil without changing the filter either.
I have never seen an engine worn out from too many oil changes.

I have been building, fixing motors, cars bikes, rvs, tractors,., since i can remember...

Can tell all kinds of stories from my dad in the 60'70's changing oil every 1500... to my uncle who would by new and only change filter once a year and add a qt or 2 tofill..

I remember in 84 uncle had a 1977 dodge van,, 100K++ took it a freind just starting out as mechanic.. told hin change the oil it ticks in the morning.. .They called me,he does your uncle service his vehicle,,,i hesitated, why you have to see this,, I went up, they took drain plug out, nothing came out.. oil was full.. the hammered a screwdrive thru the sludge..it was barely driping..dropped the pan OMG, they was hardley room around the screen.. They cleaned it up... put in his supplied oil.. wolfhead sae 30HD..

It ticked less and he sold it....it was beat as a construction van, home builder,,,

Endgine design has come along way, materials are better, techknology is way better.. rare did vehicles hit 100K back then 60-80 they ticked, rattled smoked.. always exceptions.....

Today 100-140K is a norm and the run well...I have a 94 RV 460 ford almost 200K, i had front off motor at 170K and it was spotless and never used a drop of oil..

Had 3 nissans over 200K, my present ride is a 03 Murano 273K, I just changed oil pan ,it was rusted.. Motor has an amber film and spotless inside, it uses maybe a QT in 3000 miles,, oil changed 3000-5000 max..

on 3rd BMW our X3 is at 150K, runs like a top...

I had a towing fleet, I did oil tests.ran amsoil.. Basically I did yearly changes, a few trucks city , some over road..it balanced well.. never past 25K on oil..

Do what manufacturer calls for based upon the temps and duty cycle of your driving..

I change the oil in my vehicles between 3k to 5k miles. Some require synthetic and others just plain old dino oil. Although synthetic oil will last longer , all the dirt particles are still in the oil running through the engine many to small for the filter to remove. I keep my vehicles forever so I figure changing oil often is cheap insurance. If I was trading every 5 yrs , I would run at least the max oil change interval.

Oil changes are usually cheaper than a tank of fuel and if cost is a concern, than learn to DIYS. I change my synthetic oil every 5k miles for my truck and motorcycle. It's easy to remember whenever the odometer gets to a 5 or 0, it's time to change oil.

Gas MH's should change their oil annually due to the time period that the engine is setting up during the off season. And oh yeah don't think that just starting the engine and letting it run for awhile does an engine good, actually it worst on the engine than letting it sit. If you are going to start the engine during the winter then you need to load it up and the only real way to do it is drive it.

I have been changing the oil in my vehicles at 5000 miles since the 60's. Why 5000 miles? Because it's a simple number to remember and is at or below most vehicle manufacturers recommendations. I use a high quality oil, a high quality filter, and stick with this schedule. I am more concerned about changing the oil to remove debris via the filter than I am with the Dino vs Synthetic argument.

We change our MH & Toad oil at the same time. Both use 5-20, both get Mobil One, two cases does both vehicles and the last time I bought Mobil One was at Sam's for $35 and change for a case of 6. What a deal!

Being on the road I wait till I find a good place to DIY oil changes anywhere from 3K to 5K miles, but certainly no less than once a year. We just changed the oil in our MH and my wife did it. She's part of the maintenance crew.
