Oil Sample
I ran into a problem today trying to draw an oil sample on my Cummins 450 hp to send off for analysis. The tube that went into the dipstick did not travel far enough down the hole to reach the oil before bottoming out. I tried , tried and tried some more, but no success. Am I not holding my mouth right or something? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Does it have a taper cut on the end? Try to take the curve out of the hose for the 1st couple feet. Sometimes you have to kind of corkscrew it in. Otherwise, if you are changing the oil you can catch a sample mid stream. A bit messy but that's the way our service guys do it.

I have that problem with my Cummins. I cut the hose end with two tapers and still gave trouble. Twisting and pushing helps.

Take hose to hardware store and buy longer length?

Oil Sample
No, it is not the length of the test tube. If underneath the oil pan you can see how the tube turns and reduces in size. The test tube regardless of length does not go in. Catch amount needed when draining oil. There is a valve fitting that can be placed in drain plug to take sample.

In the future sample during oil changes
Samples are more about the health of your engine rather than the oil

You might consider installing a Fumoto Drain Valve. It will make it easier to get samples in the future, drain your oil and you won't have to worry about torque and stripping treads.
