Onan 10kw generator shuts down after 1 hour of running time.

I have a Tiffin Allegro bus 42QDP with a 10kw onan generator it shuts down after about 1 hour of run time it does start back up and it might run for an hour or 6 hours but seems to shut down when it wants to. Oil is ok air filter is ok coolant is ok changed out fuel filter it is ok. Going to change out oil sending plug and temperature sensor.. any thing else I could check before taking it to Cummins?

Did you recently service the unit? If so, maybe something is triggering a sensor, or you have a bad sensor? Any codes showing? Is the oil overfilled?

What year is the coach? Would help narrow down options that might be present and contributing.

I believe Silver leaf control systems have an option to limit generator runtime.

Might be better calling Tiffin 1st.

As the previous posts have indicated, you may wish to check to be sure some auto-stop feature has not been activated. Otherwise, check to see if the generator is indicating that it has recorded an error code? If it has, you may want to retrieve the code and look it up in your manual and on this forum.

Some of us have experienced a similar problem (if it isn’t auto shut-down) and this thread will walk you through some of the fixes that were found:

Replace the small and undocumented fuel filter near the genset on the driver's side. They're inexpensive and you'll have to do it anyway, sooner or later.

I would check the settings on your Magnum system, assuming you have one. Since you didn't state the year of your MH, it's hard to understand all the facts about your situation.

I recommend you locate and set an appointment with a Cummins Onan Sales and Service center. I’m over 5 years out as a full timer and developed similar problems with my Onan 5500 RV. if you refer to you owner’s manual you will find how to display an error code. That’s a starting point to diagnosis.

That said I spent over $700 at two shops representing themselves as Onan service qualified. The last referred me to a Cummins Onan service center, which finally fixed my problem.

Code 36 is just a catch all. What it really means is the generator shut down without a command. Big help.

Agree with previous recommendations - well worth checking. Should also consider replacing the start / run relays located in the top right side of the generator (inside the shroud on the forward edge). Amazon has Bosch relays that are reasonable and a 'plug and play' replacement.

We've done 3 of these 10K Onans - they start and run smoother afterwards.

The remote harness plug about is about 24" from front of genny clean the plugs and wire ends at both . You could in plug harness and start at genny see if problem persists. Never trust a recovery coolant tank level 100% look under cap in radiator.
