Onan 6000

We went to NASCAR at Sonoma over the weekend. Saturday the temperature was in the upper 90's. We started the generator and both AC's. After about an hour the generator shut down showing an 'excessive heat' code. I checked, and the coolant level was ok. The code flashed for about 5 to 10 min and stopped. I started the generator again and within 30 seconds or so it shut down flashing 'excessive heat'. Later in the evening when it was much cooler I started the generator and have not had any problems since.

Is this normal? Seems to me that it should handle much warmer temperatures. I did hear many other gen sets running throughout the campground powering AC units in the same heat. Is there an air intake or radiator that can be cleaned?

Thanks

Mine shut down from too much oil after an oil change, also heard they will over heat from too little of oil. Check the oil

If you have coolant, you have a radatior and fan belt.

Check the radatior for dirt, by washing it with a garden hose. The water coming thru it will turn brown.

See if you can feel the belt for proper tension. It shouldn't be loose to the touch.

The 6000 shouldn't have any problems with heat as high as 90, I just drove from Florida back to Texas in a lot higher heat than that and had no problems.

I did have the same error message on the way there though, stupid me assumed that when you take a generator in for service that they actually put fluid Back into the thing before sending you on your way.
Kept running for 10-15 minutes and shutting down on high heat but I was only checking the overflow, had no idea the thing was totally without coolant in the radiator.
Don't make my same mistake and assume since the overflow tank has coolant the radiator does.
A gallon of coolant later the thing ran fine all the way back home.

The 6000 and all Quiet Diesels breath from the bottom. Make sure when you level that you have nominal 8” from the bottom of your generator to the ground. If you get to close to ground you will restrict air flow or cause recirculation of the hot air into the cool side. Cool side/intake is front, outake/exhaust is back. Put your hand near air cleaner if you feel hot air, you have an issue, raise your nose.

Also others are right, there is a standard radiator cap behind the black door near start switch. Pull the hose out all the way and verify its full.

Finally, and not likely, verify your one belt is still there, it drives the water pump. It is all the way in the back. Look underneath through your fuel filter door and shine a light to see the belt.

Dont let it continue to overheat and shutdown. Damage will occur.
