Onan 7000 gas generator error code 36
An elderly fellow in our storage yard is getting a 36 code. He first noticed it after the genset shut itself off one time. He’s afraid to take to his dealer as they have no answer as to what the problem could be, or the cost to repair. I called Cummins for him and they said it’s a “non specific” code! Has anyone run into this?

Is it a gas generator? If so , my father inlaw had the same problem and it turned out to be the electric fuel pump on the generator. We replaced it and has been problem free. ( His would run for about 15 minutes or so and would shut off)

Did you ever check for an error code when it was shutting down? His has only shut itself off the one time. He runs it now every couple of days for about 30 minutes or so without problems. But it still shows the 36 code. I’ve heard about fuel pump and filter replacement fixing problems. I talk with him and find out what maintenance he’s had done.

edited because generator type was in the title.
The following is how the codes are read and deleted. Once deleted, he can see if it comes back. If it does, it will have to be dealt will eventually. If it doesn't, rock on until it does.
To re-read the code, press the off button 3 times in 5 seconds. It will blink 3 time to tell that it is in code mode. Press the off button once, and then the error code will flash out. To clear the code buffer, press the off button 2 more times.

That is an error code that could be anything. Had the same thing on my rig. 2 conditions: 1) would not start, error code 36 and 2) would start, run for a bit, then shut off. Hard to restart and error code 36. Initially thought it was the fuel pump. Ended up being the plunger, electric fuel shutoff on the carburetor. Go figure. Replaced that a year ago, and has done well, so far.

Means engine shut down without being turned off. Could be filter clogged or fuel line blocked or bad fuel pump. Start easy and cheap and move up!

I helped replace the fuel pump, fuel filter, oil and filter and spark plugs. Pretty much the 500 hour maintenance. Still code 36!

Had similar codes, I did all that you did. Still same problem. Pulled the generator out of the bay. Found the slip rings where dirty. Ordered a cleaning stone from a place called flight systems. Also changed my control board with one of theirs. Their control board does away with the nuisance codes. Lot of help from the people at flight systems. Trouble shooting guides on their website. Hope this helps.

Thanks, but can you tell me more about the "slip rings" you're referring to?
Details would help me a lot. TIA

Go to Flight Systems website for video explaining to cleaning process. I have done this on several gen-sets with great results.

See photo where the brushes and slip rings are located. One screw holds the brushes in place, unplug cable to fully remove and inspect. Two brushes should slide freely in the holder and are pushed out by spring. If they do this, they are OK. I had one brush heat and melt to that side of the holder then stick. The generator won't stay running unless the brushes contact the generator's slip rings. Just takes minutes to confirm if they are OK. If the brush holder has heated or melted and a brush is stuck like photo 3 shows, please reply for the likely cause.
