Onan Diesel Generator oil check: hot or cold?

As far as anyone knows, does it matter whether or not the generator is hot or cold when checking the oil? The manual I have doesn't specify.

The generator is question is a Cummins/Onan Quiet Diesel 6000.

THANKS and have a great Memorial Day.

It really doesn't matter. However the unit should be shut off and allowed to sit for at least 15 minutes to allow all the oil to drain back to the oil pan before checking the level.

I believe my generator has a “Full Cold” mark so I check it cold.

I do it both ways, prior to a trip I'll check it cold. While a trip and after it's been running I'll shut it off and wait and then check it when it still hot.
