Onan gas vs LP generator questions
Long story made short
I have an Onan 6.5kw (i think) generator that I am going to install in a 1998 30ft Beaver Monterey. This is a CAT diesel pusher with a rear generator. (YES a rear generator) I am almost sure there was a LP generator oem in this RV at one time. I have gotten VERY lucky getting a free generator AND a guy wanting to learn to do generator work donating his skills and time and LOOKING for people having problems with a generator. The generator I have was in pieces with ZERO OIL- a lot of dirt daubers nest - general debri AND with NO history but enough pieces for MY GUY to put it together. Within a few hours of cleaning up and by adding oil even with what was most likely a 10 year old oil filter -then- BINGO---- a smooth running generator. At this point I have a running gasoline generator with the electrical output at factory specs. Sure wish I could get lucky once in a while. If you had a couple hours I could tell you the story - it is truly a whopper.
NOW for the hard part
My RV has a large LP tank (100 gal) and lines run for it already. Although I am confident this is not the same original generator and will require mounting changes whether gas or LP. I do not want to give up using LP gas. I have a large tank but finding LP gas conversion parts (or kit) for Onan is proving difficult for MY GENERATOR GUY. Looking for help here folks.
The main problem with keeping it gasoline is: WHERE DO I MOUNT THE GAS TANK?? I plan to buy a marine tank in the 20 to 30 gallons range if we keep it gas but I just dont know where the logical AND safe location is. Keep in mind - the GAS set up is running and only requires a tank and misc hdw for the mounting. OH yes - new plugs, wires, ect- oil and new filter will be added before installing
My highest priority is where to mount the gas tank.
I am leaning to gas but would like pros and cons -- gas vs LP
Greetings from the gulf coast and thanks in advance for your consideration
