Onan generator will not start when I push the start button it will turn over but will not start when I let of of the start button it sparks but will not start

Sometimes you have to hold the start switch much longer than you would think.

Gas or diesel? Any error codes flashing? Is it kicking over but then immediately dying?

Is the fuel tank above 1/4 tank? Hold down “stop” to prime before trying to start. How long are you holding “start”? Sometimes you have to hold it down and let it crank longer than you think it would take. You should be able to crank for 25 seconds or so before getting an over crank error.

if you can get to it easy,i would pull the fuel hose off the carb and crank it to see if its getting gas,mine wouldn't start and i thought well it hasn't been run in 3 yrs so figured carb was gummed up,so started taking it off and took fuel hose off and was like hey i just cranked on this why is there no gas in the hose.so cranked it with hose off and nothing.fuel pump died.replaced it and after about 10 seconds of cranking it fired right up.

If it sparks but will not kick in, I would check for the flow of gas through the filter. BTW, how old is that gas?

What ever you do.. don't just put in new carb.. 99.9999% of time.. they can be cleaned and 90% of time they can be cleaned on the eng.. 1st thing I would do.. is take off air filter.. use all safety precautions.. spray start fluids in.. give it a try.. and at same time see if choke is working.. 2nd check for fuel.. good luck and let us know what you did..

On my Onan 4K gas the fuel pump would work when it felt like it....Replaced with a new one and Chug-chug -a- chug...Lights!..A/C!....

What year, model generator. Just had the same problem, replaced the fuel pump. Cost $45.
