I have repaired many floats back in the day. I aimed to employ a rather smaller hole and a small amount of solder repaired the float. The weight you add is not an issue even on these tiny Onan floats
You could do a permanent fix if you cleaned the glue away to allow a solder fix, and you could be certain of having a working gennie for the trip home. I wouldn't condemn the OEM carb. for such a simple fix.
