Onan generator

Hello, I have a 2005 onan 5500 Marquis Gold generator. I’ve never had any problems with it before. I was testing it and it began to pulsate.
I notice the fule filter looked almost empty. I primed it and gas was running out of the carb air in take. I had it flooded by that time. I let it sit for a few days and tried to start it again. Same thing, running out of the carb. At this point I have tried several times to start it. Same problem. Any ideas?
Thanks

It appears that you are dealing with two problems. 1. An intermitant fuel pump(not uncommon on these generators) 2. Some crude in the fuel line that is now in your carburetor.

Replace the pump and filter and blow out the lines before you clean the carb.

The carburator has a float with needle and seat. If the smallest peice of debris gets in the needle, it will not seal and flood, like yours is. You'll need to remove the bown and clean it out.

A stuck needle can also allow for excess fuel (flooding situation). Try tapping the side of the carb with screwdriver handle a few times.

Hello all. Thank you for your input. I removed the carb and dropped the bowel. The float was full of gas. For a short term fix I drilled a 1/16” hole in the top and drained the gas out. Plugged it with the end of a tooth pick and sealed with super glue. Been running under load for 20 minutes now. Hoping to get by until we go home this April. We’ll see. I shouldn’t need it, but I want it working. I’ll replace the cab at home. Or maybe here as a snowbird if I have to.

I have repaired many floats back in the day. I aimed to employ a rather smaller hole and a small amount of solder repaired the float. The weight you add is not an issue even on these tiny Onan floats

You could do a permanent fix if you cleaned the glue away to allow a solder fix, and you could be certain of having a working gennie for the trip home. I wouldn't condemn the OEM carb. for such a simple fix.

I didn’t mention it’s a plastic float. But thanks though.

Gas will dissolve super glue. If the float had gas in it there's a leak in the float. You found a temporary fix but long term it should be replaced.
