Can you post more info on your gen set. Model number, gas/diesel/propane?
New problem ?
Have you tried shutting of the main circuit breakers in the RV to make sure all loads are removed.

Need to have the generator info, but how did you determine it is a "high idle". Unless it is an inverter type generator (doubtful on your 1990 Pinnacle), the generator needs to run at a fixed RPM (usually 3600) to produce the proper voltage and frequency, so it idles at the same speed that it runs under load. The governor keeps the RPMs constant regardless of load.

Plug a voltmeter or frequency meter into an outlet with the generator on. If the RPMs are too high, the voltage and frequency will also be too high, i.e. above 125v and 62 Hz. On the other hand, if the voltage is in the 117-125 range and the frequency between 58 and 62, it is just doing its job.

Glad you found the problem, thanks for posting you're getting things fixed.
Sorry it wasn't a cheap repair.
