For the OP, do you know the make and model of your transfer switch?

Is the motorhome plugged in to a GFCI breaker?
Just thinking out loud here.

50 amp weather proof box outside wired to house breaker panel. Not a GFCI.

No idea. It's original one for the Ventana.

As others have said, this indicates a problem in your transfer switch. These are intended to supply power from EITHER your generator in the RV, OR the generator which supplies your house, city, area or state, but NEVER to allow them to share the duties of power sharing.
The electric grid has many switches that DO allow power sharing, but in alternating current systems, the voltages MUST be synchronized before the 2 parts are joined together (ie the switch closes), or else very large currents may flow. Your transfer switch is not designed to do that, and must BREAK before MAKE in order to do this.
So it's not at all surprising that your house main breaker tripped and your shore power breaker tripping indicates that a device connected to shore power was the cause.
But yes, your transfer switch should allow you to start your generator while plugged into shore power.

I thought it was odd that it tripped both breakers, for the box and the house main breaker.

When I start my generator while still on shore power (at home) I do trip the shore power's GFCI (yes, I have a 50 amp GFCI...) every time. Other than that nothing bad.

Questions,
What size house breaker tripped ?
What was running when you shut down the generator ?

The OP did state that the outlet the RV was plugged into tripped as well as the home's main breaker. I'm assuming that breaker would be rated 100 amp or better.
