Over boost?

We are driving our 2004 discovery, while on the highway, when the rig wants to downshift to go up a hill, we are getting a dash warning saying stop engine and check engine. Stops as soon as you release the throttle. Anyone else have this issue, thinking we are possibly over boosting?

What engine & chassis do you have?
What Fault Codes do you have? If you don't have a code reader, I suggest you get one.

Maybe temperature related. Check your coolant temperature. Also can be oil related, you may have low oil level.

Over-boost would be well down my list of suspects and it may not even be possible in that particular configuration (max turbo boost may be the norm). Both Stop and Check conditions will have stored a code, so get them read out and go from there.

A safe starting point would be fresh fuel & air filters and an oil & filter change. Inability to maintain a proper air/fuel ratio can trigger a lot of diesel fault codes.

If you haven't done it in a while, the cheapest/simplest thing to do first, is change both fuel filters. Often, when CEL's are triggered by acceleration, it's a fuel issue.

Another thing to look at would be the waste gate, if you have one. Sometimes they become corroded and need to be lubricated.

There's also an electrical component that could be checked.

Based on the 2004 brochure I'm saying a 2004 Discovery has an Cat 7.2L (C7) with an exhaust brake, but it sure would be nice to know for sure.
