Just east of Terre Haute, there’s a Walmart on the northwest corner of State Hwy 46 and I-70 .
Easy in and out .
It’s never too crowded.
Grew up there just down the road.

Near Effingham (Watson, IL) is a small campground called Percival Springs Airport and Campground. If all you want is an overnight this is a good place. It is located at a small private airport and the sites are next to the runway. When we were there one or two Cessna types took off, nothing bigger. There is a LifeFlight helicopter stationed there so I guess it could go up any time.
Cost was nominal, around $20-25. There is even a cafe restaurant if you want a simple meal.
We stayed there coming back from Florida a year ago would not hesitate to stay there again.
Best to call and make sure they're open during the winter though. There was an onsite host when we were there late last fall.

Just stop before you get too tired.
Don't forget to include Sam's Club (almost always in a 'good' part of town, quieter, less traffic after 8PM), Home Depot, Lowes.

We have taken that route before

We live in IL, so we have taken and are familiar with your route planned. At that time of year, better to plan on only 250-300 miles max because of weather conditions. East of Effingham is a small town called Casey, IL that has free donation campground in the city park. Effingham has a large number of truck stops of every brand. If you are still winterized, Effingham also has a large number of chain hotels with very large parking lots in case you want to have a hot shower and free breakfast by staying in a hotel.

We tend to stay on I-57/55 all the way South to I-10 and New Orleans, but if the weather is good, it is possible to head West out of Memphis, or Jackson. We have seen snow in Memphis but never further South than Oxford. Safety is an issue in Memphis. There are some free casino parking lots near Tunica. It is a little bit off your path if going to Texas, but if you turn East when you hit I-10, there are lots of cheap campsites, casinos, rest areas, etc right along the Gulf near Biloxi and all those small towns. Unlike Florida, that area is NOT overrun with Snowbirds and not very crowded. It is still more of a family summer beach destination. But temps will be 40-50 degrees so still comfortable with a light jacket.

Welcome! We are also from the Thumb. (Port Huron). My wife and I just drive till we get tired and use the Walmart App to pick the next one at whatever distance we wish to stop at. Never had a problem at a Walmart. They must know there is no way we can pull in and spend the night and not need something from the store...

Overnight

Might check out Danville, Indiana, county park. It may be open all year. Stayed there a couple years ago. $20 (at that time) quiet, good electric, all level.
That was the first stop on our maiden voyage and the beginning of a 6500 mile adventure. I’d do it again.

I'm impressed with the number of suggestions everyone has given on here. I'm a fellow Michigander leaving for Florida the day after Christmas. My first night's camping will be in a campground in WV where water is shutoff for the season. I could rough it and leave the rig winterized until day 2, but I plan to un winterize before I head down.

When it gets colder in a few weeks I'm going to fire up the furnace and see how much propane I burn through to keep the basement warm. I bought wireless temperature sensors on Amazon, so I can monitor temperatures. I have an extend-a-stay kit on my coach, so I'll run from an external 40 lb cylinder so I can see how much I use.

Then hopefully I'll be sanitizing and filling the water tank before Christmas. The backup plan is to carry RV antifreeze to flush with.

If you make it to Mt. Vernon or Marion Illinois I would stay at Wal-Mart or Sams for an overnighter. One of the members stated something about Cairo, Illinois. There is no way in hell I would stay in Cairo. Too many gangs, criminals, and vagrants. Years ago i MIGHT have. If you make it to Sikeston, MO there is a Loves approximately 3 miles past the I-55 exit on the left. If you make it south of Sikeston close to dark there is a rest area south of New Madrid, MO. I rarely take 55 to 40 to Little Rock. I normally take hwy 67 to Rock. There is about 50 miles of 2 lane then it turns to four lane with less traffic than 55 South and definitely less traffic than 40 west.

Those are only for companies, when you call-in you give your company name and USDOT number, it does cost, many sites have a heater/A-C hose that fits into the passenger window to comply with no-idling laws. Most are back or pull-ins.

We've stop ar the rest areas for overnight. Also there is a couple of Flying Js that have RV spots.

Just across the Indiana Illinois boarder is the exit for route 1. about 5 miles south of I-70 is Lincoln Trails State Park. They have water and dump as well as clean bath houses. It is easy in and out. There is no gate fee and it is $20.00 a night. We use this park several times a year and have never been dis-satisfied.

Hi, Yes Flying J and Pilot have free RV slots, and now with a reservation and payment in advance they will reserve one for ya. During the high demand season its tough to find one when you need it most! I have seen red reserved cones closing off those reserved spots that some one called ahead to reserve and payfor. It would be really nice if they could repurpose some of the truck spots, but that is unlikely as the number of trucks needing parking spots has gone through the roof and outpaced the growth in truckstops along the byways of USA bigly.



Yes the truck parking etc system is there and I love the no idle law it is common sense. Blue Air heaters are such a great thing as is webasto I do not know why almost every truck on the market does not have one!


The Flying J in Ripon, CA has six reserved parking spots for RVs that are free. Remove the yellow cone and pull into the spot. The diesel side offers reserved truck and RV parking for $15/night. THIS IS GROWING ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

I recall some really old cars circa late 40s and 50s etc even had a gasoline fired heater so the motor did not have to idle! For parking!! Our new vehicle seems to have some sort of reservoir for retaining heat to serve up if needed when parked! The hybrid system starts when necessary for heat and or battery charging while parked! Dangerous in a closed garage but outside its a neat feature. BlueAir heater would be so much better, but now I have moved to southern US to get away from the extremist cold weather swings brought on by global warming.
