I looked back for my quote from Sureflight the aircraft facility. This is from one year ago and maybe one month. I had the head guy come down and he looked at our coach. He gave me these options and this is copied from an email he sent, sort of informal but his quote.

Quotes to repair motorhome;

1. Clearcoat top and blend areas on sides with clear that are peeling labor & material $3,000.00 ( down time 7 days)
2. Detail and Clearcoat complete unit top and sides labor & materials $6,000.00 (down time 14 days)
3. Prep repaint motorhome in existing scheme and colors labor & materials $10,000.00 (down time 21 days)
4. Prep repaint motorhome (new scheme and colors) labor & materials $12,500.00 (down time 24 days)

Seems fair to me for sure. Anyway I had a dilemma with this and I will post it here as I posted it in another thread on CC forum.

So here is the question: We decided to not just do the clear coat option as our coach doesn't have the base coat of paint and that is why the clear coat is peeling. So looking on the website of Mikes in Indiana there are many older coaches of our era repainted with the swirls to make them look newer and they certainly look awesome, go take a look at his site. DeWitt is the guy from sureflight and they have the computer and equipment to paint the swirls or what ever you want.

So I originally wanted to do the modern swirl paint job and the ole girl would look new and spiffy. Then I started thinking..... our coach is an older era Country Coach and they are kind of sought after by some crowds, we love ours, blah blah blah. I started thinking that I shouldn't paint it modern but re paint with the original paint scheme but with full body paint which they started in 03. That was the question, new swirl paint or keep her original. I know it's not a Mustang or GTO but keeping it original has become important to me in a way. What are your thoughts? Ha.

Ok--painting anything outside vs using an environmentally controlled paint booth--not good. If you are going to spend that kind of money, they go'ta use a booth--IMHO!

If it were mine I'd probably stay with the original scheme. Just me, I like things original. However, I don't think you can go wrong either way. Its just whichever look you like best. I honestly can't see either way affecting the value of the coach any differently.

Plus a trip to Mexico - what could possibly go wrong?

funjnt, great write up - thanks for the specific details. Sureflight sounds like a strong possibility for me. Thanks again, Bill

Too bad RVs depreciate so quick...never get that price back on resale. Might help sell the unit (especially if the existing finish is bad), but not what the paint costs.

funjnt, the problem with just redoing the clear is that it will peel again. The only way to ensure that it won't peel is to paint the entire coach and then clear,

Your bid of $10K looks really good compared to my bid of $29K to do the same thing.

Yes about the clear coat. DeWitt is the head paint guy who came down and looked at coach. He said the clear was applied directly to the fiberglass and that is why is is peeling. If it had full body paint the clear would have been fine as int is on the other parts of coach.

Yes to the price. There is quite a discrepancy in pricing and it raises my eyebrows too. I asked DeWitt a few questions about the process etc. and they are right on with doing the work properly. Sand, primer, paint and clear. I spoke with Mikes in Indiana and he puts a double coat of clear. I would see if they can do the same. I would imagine if you paint aircraft you can paint an rv, same basics and method. I am hoping to have some extra money this summer to have it repainted. For this price I don't think you can go wrong. Let me know if you speak with them or DeWitt. He was a cool guy and seemed knowledgeable.

Saddlesore,
Will you be bringing a collapsible extension ladder with you? I need to replace my ladder...you are making me think maybe not.

Mine is two piece with the longer lower section in one of the bays...so I would need to go in a bay to get a ladder anyway.

Yup got the high dollar collapsible 12(usable) footer, collapses down to about 3 foot or less @ Crappy World.
Our ladders internal mounts were rusting away and with my lard counterweights, didn't trust the weak looking mounts thru the fiberglass.

Probably best to stay out of Maryland and Chicago .. bad things happen when you go over the border there

Should probably add Los Angeles SAN Francisco and A host of other border towns
