The dealer painted over the stripes on ours before we bought it and two years later they are cracking and one has pealed off. Recommend you remove the stripes then paint not paint over them.

Last week I painted one of the gold stripes on our 10 yr old FW. I taped it off w/newspaper, then lightly sanded over the stripe. I then put on 4 coats of Rustoleum gold paint from Walmart and it really looks like new now. I did the gold stripes on the other side of the FW 2 years ago and they still look very good.
I figured if they eventually peeled, I could still remove the decal, but so far it's good.

Just finished painting over the decals on my 2002 Terra. While not a professional job, I am happy with it. Costs less than $100 but about 45 hours of taping and painting. I used Rustoleum 2x Spray, wiped with acetone/alcohol and water before painting. I changed the colors (or I should say the wife did). The green in the original pic is now black. Before and after pics.
