parking brake always not up to it

Hello again USA helpful playmates
What do you do to improve the 1997 F53 parking brake- apparently called a "ZF " unit possibly made in germany I think ? Just made the RV fail our road worthy safety test here we have to pass every year !#
Regards and thanks for your recent help and suggestions !

Good morning to you on the far side of the pond .

I'm not sure what park ( emergency ) brake system your Ford chassis has , so I have to ask ; is it a drum brake mounted on the back of the transmission ?

Has anyone adjusted the brake shoes ?
Is it cable or electric solenoid operated ?
Dose it look like the photo below?

EDIT sorry photo won't load to site , I'll see if I can fix that

Well I'm here to try again , to load the photo , kind of odd it gets rejected considering I downloaded it from the site .

Diagram is for the system showing a star wheel adjuster , could be the brake shoes are in need of adjustment .

11 PM on West Coast I'll check in in the morning .

NO star wheel adjuster on a ZF emergency brake. The adjustment is on the cable.
The posted diagram is NOT for a ZF brake.
I suggest removing the drive shaft from the brake assy. Unbolt and remove brake drum. Drum will be difficult to remove but will come off with enough effort. There are a couple of holes in the drum that can be tapped for puller bolts. Will need to grind the end a bottoming tap flat.Have drum cleaned up on a brake drum lathe. Sand glaze off the shoes. The shoes can NOT be replace without removing the whole assemble from the transmission and removing the center shaft. Press required. Not a DIY job for most.

OR! you can find rebuilt ZF emergency brake assy. on the internet.

Richard

Hello both and thanks for your help..The ZF propshaft brake unit similar to the one you show in the picture is behind my transmission except -.There is no centre bolt so the drum cannot be removed ,and I beleive that the whole unit has to be removed from the transmission to be stripped down to gain any access to the brake shoes ,a job def not for me !! I just thought someone would have an idea that I had not thought of ,except adjustment of the brake cable which of course i have done already ! Thank you once again for your help !!

This might be helpful: https://www.justanswer.com/rv-motorh...n-mounted.html
Just ignore the pop-up, and read the article.
New replacement shoes are available though: https://www.truckid.com/1997-ford-f-53-parking-brakes/

Yes the drum can be removed. There are 4 bolts holding it on.
I rebuilt the ZF brake assy. on my MH and others. I know how they work.
You are correct about the brake shoes. A lot of work.
