Parking Brake/Slide Outs

I have a 2003 Holiday Rambler Vacationer, Workhorse chassis and lately when I go to extend my slide outs, they will not operate until I release and reset the emergency parking brake. I have to do this several times before I can extend the slide outs. I understand that there possibly is a "switch" under the dash that affects this but I don't have a clue what the switch looks like. Any assistance would be appreciated to help me correct this problem.

Does the brake on indicator light on the dash when you set the parking brake? Normally the house builder will use the switch that lights the dash light to also interlock the slides. My knowledge of the Workhorse chassis is limited to being able to determine it's not a Ford so my idea might be a WAG (Wild A$$ Guess).

Hi ! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

I had never thought about the slideouts being interlocked with the park brake, but it makes good sense. I can't answer your question but maybe someone on here can.

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Happy New Year!

nyrngrz,
On most, it's not necessarily a "Switch". The parking brake switch itself, provides a ground, for the electrical side of the leveling system pump motor or electric slide motors, depending on if they're electric or hydraulic. Obviously, if there's no ground, any electrical motor, beit a pump motor for hydraulic operation or, electric slide motors, cannot operate. And, in many cases, as a safety precaution built into the system(s), if the parking brake is released on many coaches, and the leveling system is in operation, in any phase, the leveling system will automatically reverse and, retract all jacks.

And, it's also the same with slides. Pretty much stands to reason that they don't want you cruising down the road with a slide out or jacks coming down although, it's been reported on here that some have experienced just those dilemmas.

Yes, some manufacturers do use an interlock switch so the slides can't be moved unless the rig is parked. The method of doing so varies by manufacturer too.
Mine won't extend or retract if I'm too far out of level.

I had the same issue with a 2003 coach on a 2002 Workhorse P32 chassis. On mine, the foot operated ebrake has a small plunger switch near the pivot point of the pedal arm that provides a ground (when the ebrake is engaged) to light the dashboard indicator and (through a diode) is then sent to the slide and jack controllers. The switch is a bit hard to remove. On my Winnebago I was able to access it by raising the instrument panel and accessing it from the top. After the switch was removed upon close inspection it had a Ford logo and part number. Replaced the switch and everything has been fine since.

On my Horizon the parking brake must be applied before the slides or jacks to operate. I make good sense to me as we would not want the slides to come out going down the road. Same with the jacks.

Yes, the parking brake indicator light is lit on my dash when the parking brake is set. When I release the parking brake, the light goes out.

Hmm... Our 2008 HR Admiral slide control board has an ignition disable relay, but no connection to the parking brake switch. (The leveler control does have a connection to the parking brake switch.)

The 2004 Workhorse diagrams I have say the parking brake switch activates the following circuits:

Instrument Cluster (dash indicator)
Ignition Switch
DRL (Daytime Running Light) Module
and a connection for the coach builder to use

If I follow that last connection through the Monaco diagrams I have, it dead-ends. That is, Monaco doesn't use it.

Now, here's where I should have kept better notes when I did some wiring re-work in the dash (of my Ford-chassis coach). I know that there is a wire from a Ford pigtail to the leveler controls. I had to reconnect it after the splice came undone.

In any case, if your coach is similar (on the Monaco side) to mine, then there's no connection between the parking brake and the slide controls. The ignition must be off, yes.

Same here.
Ignition must be off. That prevents accidental switch activation while driving. No connection to Parking Brake circuit.
