When you hit 1/2 tank, start looking. We look everywhere we go for fuel. It may take another 1/4 tank to find a station with enough room. We are a 60' DP with car in tow. And avoid the big expensive truck stops like the plague. We've never run out. The cheapest diesel pumps are at home, so I sometimes get below 1/8 tank.

Maybe you know this already, but you cannot back up when towing 4 down. The tow bars are not designed for pushing and can be easily bent. Also the wheels of your towed car will work against you and may very quickly rotate opposite of what you want.
There are people who will do some limited backing when going straight; but there is a lot that can go wrong quickly and manufacturers won’t support it.

Every night I scout out the next days fuel stops on Google. Street view is your friend. Look for pumps that are parallel to the road, or outside pumps where you can see easy access around the building and out the other side. I try to come up with at least 2 likely candidates so you have a backup in case the first doesn't pan out.

4. Using Google Maps, scout out fuel stations with pumps parallel (not perpendicular) to the convenience store
5. If you absolutely HAVE to use fuel stations with pumps perpendicular, pick the outer most lane, so you see if you have enough swing room to get out
6. Last, if all else fails, disconnect your toad so you have less length with which to get out

using "Next Exit" works fine if you are traveling interstates. But, if, like us, you like the secondary roads, do like others have said - plan the trip out, look via Gas Buddy, or trip Wizard and see what stations are available and then use google earth to get a look. Yep, kind of a PITA, but it is better than getting landlocked in a station with everyone parked so that you cant get out. Also, really look for stations with pumps parallell to the street as they have better in / out.
