That would depend on how much ice you use.
With just my wife and I we have never needed more than what the ice maker in the refrigerator puts out.
I figure if we needed more the price of the portable ice maker would buy a lot of bags of ice and we wouldn't have to worry about it breaking down, storage and cleaning it.

Love our ice maker. It sits on top of our outside refer and runs all day. When its full we move the ice to a zip lock bag and freeze. Always have plenty of ice for cold drinks.

YES!
Bags of pre-made ice take too much room.
We have no icemaker (2 way fridge too small).
And, the ice maker we have will make a load of ice ever 6 minutes...We use it at the studs and stucco house during holidays, because of how great it is. Fill it with bottled water of your choice and it's the best ice you can have.
Safe travels

If you don't have an Ice Maker in the fridge than YES. What ever you do, don't buy it from Camping World, they are way too expensive. I had one form Target for less than half the price.
The only down side is you have to set it up someplace after you get to where you are going.

If you beverage of choice is chilled by ice rather than taking up room in the fridge and you don't have an ice maker in your freezer (or it can't keep up demand) then yes they are worth it. Shop around. You shouldn't pay more than a $100. Local Sam's Club has them for $90 at the moment.

What type do you have?
Does it keep ice frozen in the unit or do you have to move it to the freezer?
Does it stop making ice when full and then automatically start again when level gets low?
Where do you put it when your camping?

I said no, wife said yes. I lost so we now have one. We have used it once. Bringing ice from home or buying a small bag from time to time is a lot less work and does not take up valuable storage space.

I have had 2 of them. Gave both away and installed a stand alone Ice maker that will keep the Ice frozen.
Ice no longer melts fast in a drink to water it down. No need to bag the Ice and find room in a freezer to make it hard. No need to keep adding water by hand. And they do need to have the holding tanks etc to be cleaned more often.
But I Full Time. Weekend RVers may get by with a cheap fast melting portable.
The stand alone does need to be defrosted around every 3 months when used a lot every day.

I removed the refrigerator ice maker to give us more freezer space and got a portable one. It works great. I make Ziploc bags and put it I the freezer.

At bed time it gets turned off, ice melts and is again ready for tomorrows ice making.
Tried putting the ice in zippie bags but that just made i ball of ice stuck together.
We first got the larger version and returned it as it was hard to really see its size in a picture. The smaller one makes more ice than we can possibly use.
Yes this unit has NO ability to keep made ice frozen. Some ice does melt and the full sensor just makes more fresh ice.

Have one. Used to use it and it worked well. Now have RR refrigerator with ice maker that readily makes lots of ice. So the portable sits in a closet.
