Possible 50 Amp Xfer Switch Failure
1997 CC with Power Tech Gen.: when on shore power, all ac circuits work normal. Removing shore power and then starting my CD7000 Power Tech, nada - nothing. Diagnosed 30 amp breakers on gen set, getting 110 to 120 vac. at the breakers. Per Pwr Tech home office technician, the Xfer Switch is the problem.
Anyone with a similar scenario? One person I know suggested tapping the box with palm of hand several times to make contacts free up. Tried that. No positive results. Next thing will be to open up the box containing the switch and check if any arcing has occurred
Also, if Xfer Switch needs to be replaced, what 50 amp brand would you recommend.
Thanks for any input or suggestions...........safe travel.....Meltdown.

Yup, open up the xfer switch. All power disconnected of course. See if anything visible bad. Check for voltages in and out. If bad, then decide if to replace the switch or put in a couple plugs and just manually connect genny or shore.

Did you install the new surge guard yourself or use an electrician?

If you are comfortable with using basic tools and working on electrical circuits then this job is for you.
30 minutes maximum, secure ALL electricity, open the circuit breakers on the batteries and unplug the MH from shore power. Remove the cover from the Transfer Switch and disconnect the wires form the shore power cable and the generator. Make sure you label them first, remove the old box and install the new one and hook up the cables. Make sure you properly tighten the cable screws down on the wires. You need to check these yearly at the beginning of the season. All done (fire) power it up and check your handy work

Replacing the switch is probably the easiest solution and not all that difficult. Lots of You Tube videos for both troubleshooting and replacing the switch.

Make sure you check the gen line at the transfer switch. I had the same problem your describing and two techs diagnosed it as a bad transfer switch. It turned out to be a bad connection in a junction box between the gen set and the transfer switch. This is probably a rare case but worth checking before purchasing a new transfer switch as most suppliers won't accept returns on electrical components.

Your transfer switch is made out or residential components which we happily bounce down the road, and the screws that hold your wires in their contacts can come loose. Before you buy your new transfer switch, take a #2 common screwdriver to the transfer switch and make certain all the lugs are tight. Power completely off of course.

Remove ALL POWER. Open transfer switch, tighten all screws for wiring. Start Gen, check for input power from Gen, we already know the shore side works. If power from Gen and no power to house replace transfer switch, if there is power to house the tightening of screws did it. If no power from Gen check if Gen is putting out power if yes check wiring to transfer switch. If no Gen is the problem. If you are comfortable working with power go for it if not and don't have a meter or test light get one or let a pro do the work.

Good info so far. Once my ole Winnie did this when I switched from shore power to genny power. Turned out to be a thermal overload tripped bc I had too much stuff turned on drawing too much current. I checked circuit breakers, switch contacts, reset manual overloads and looked everywhere but couldn't find a problem. After about an hour I tried it again and everything started working! Have no idea where the thermal overload is located on a 1999 Winnie Adventurer 30 amp RV. Learned to have everything turned off before connecting to shore power or genny power. Never happened again.

Your coach may see your portable gen power as not having a ground. You can wire a plug g-n and plug that into your gen to provide the n-g bond. search here for edison plug to see more.
