Rain, Rain, Rain

Just back from our first extended trip. We had a great two and a half weeks visiting with family, and seeing some "bucket list" sites along the way. But we also drove through a lot of rain. So is there any way to keep the compartments aft of the rear wheels dry, or is it just part of the journey?

The only suggestion I can think of is double check the rubber around the doors to make sure they are doing what they are supposed to do.
