Did the counter guy say why there are more returns on the Rand McNally? I have the 5510
and it's Ok, but I want a bigger screen and better resolution and detail on the map.

Let us know how you like the Magellan

Said that most of them came back because of a dark screen that's hard to read in sun light and roads that are newer than 5 years old are still missing in a lot of places. Said he had one guy returned it because it shows a truck pulling a 5th trailer instead of a motorhome.

I like to pre-plan my trip. I currently use streets & trips just for this purpose. Then I research what there is to do along the way. If I make up a trip on my laptop, is it downloadable to either the Megellan or the rand mcnally units?
I would love to purchase one of these, but which one.
Let me just say...Thank you to everyone who is chiming in on this forum, then information is fablous and it is appreciated by all of us.

Of course he would be referring to the RVND 5510 since the RVND 7710 has not been released yet. I know the 7710 will have additional features compared to the 5510, and hopefully the delay is due to additional improvements being incorporated.

I got tired of buying GPS devices that didn't do what they should do, so I bought a Fujitsu touch screen computer (like the ones used by UPS) off eBay and installed MS Streets and Trips with the GPS antenna. It has a seven inch screen and S&T allows you to customize your trip pretty much any way you want. I have owned Magellans, Tom Toms and Garmins, and I much prefer the Fujitsu.

Lots of interesting chatter about GPS in this thread. I too am curious about the new 7" R-M unit. But the suggestions about using a tablet or touch screen PC are neat ideas too. Using our nearly new Tom-Tom on our second outing in the MH with a car on dolly in tow proved rather adventuresome. Tom took us down some marginal roads, tried to take us down some dirt lanes we declined to follow and sent us down an unmarked dead end. Fortunately there was a field I was able to turn around in. Lessons learned, Tom no longer trusted...back to maps!

I'm always breaking out my Focus smartphone instead of typing things in to my Garmin.. Wife asked the other day, "So just why do we have a $300 GPS stuck to the windshield again?"

I had per-ordered the Rand McNally 7710, and received it today. I will report back to you all as to how good it works.

Did you by chance pre-order from Camping World? If so, did you receive the lifetime map update?

I received an email from Camping World that they shipped my 7710 yesterday. My review will be posted soon also.

To the member who asked, it is supposed to include lifetime updates.

Understood, but my purchase receipt didn't list it so I was curious if it was actually included. Mine is due Friday, so I guess I'll know then

Like Moderator JohnRR, I'm curious where this info came from.

I check the Escapees & RVNet forums and found this . . .
  • Escapees -- one person "claims" he returned a 5510. I quoted "claims" because it was the first and only post from this person. Mmmmmm . . .
  • RVNet -- there are several people using the 5510. Most like it. Some report initial programming difficulties and a forum moderator gave the unit a thumbs up after a long trip. He noted a couple of problems, but all in all, the 5510 worked well.
Randco, do you have a source for your comment?
There are 16 pages of comments on RVnet Class A motorhome forum. Under "NEW GPS Unit Just for RVers. WOW: Look and see!
