Re-tread tires?

Has anyone used re-tread tires on a class A diesel pusher?
Re-treads are far cheaper than new, cost about $200.00 per tire, but I have driven enough highways to know - re-treads come apart. Lake everyone, I have seen the tire remnants all over the road, and can only imagine what kind of damage that would do to an RV at 65MPH.
On the other hand - RV's typically do not get the mileage that the commercial trucks do, so, does that help the life?
any opinions or experiences are helpful - Thanks!

RV Tires age out - not wear out the tread.

Retreads for semi-trailers makes sense. Millions of miles.

RV's don't travel millions of miles. Hence they age out before they wear out.

Personally I think you've already answered your own question.
Retread come apart, with the potential to cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to the MH - not to mention the loss of camping time if you were on your first day of vacation.

To me, the risk does not justify the cost savings.

^^^^ What PoDivin said. A blown tire tread can easily cause 10-15 thousand dollars in damage to save a few hundred.

Re-treads aren't legal on the steer axle , and I'll bet you already know the reason.
Purchasing a re-treaded tire ; you have no idea of the history of the casing and you're dependent on the re-tread company to properly examine it for age and damage due to it's prior use.

Drove 18 wheelers for 30 years. For 3 of those years, I pulled railroad piggyback trailers & containers which were uniformly on retreads. During that period, I spent more time w/tire repair guys than I did cumulatively over the rest of my "career."

Maybe it's a an economy of scale thing - if you owned 10,000 rigs you save over the long run - but you couldn't pay me to put them on our MoHo.

I wouldn't assume those are retread remnants. Also, I don't know this either way, but I'm not even sure that's evidence of a blow out--never even seen a video of a blow out.

But I agree with the others not to do it for the reasons mentioned. I would add though that the age of the tire is likely stamped on the sidewall, but I'd be surprised if the age you discover is less than four years old.

Totally agree! I would never use re-treads on our MH. Our lives are worth much more than the cost of those new tires! JMHO

I would never chance a retread on my motorhome. I value my life and safety is important. Not to mention the damage it can cause. It is also very inconvenient to have a blowout. I am one to not worry about price and try to purchase the best tire I can based on research.

FWIW, in 2017 I had 6 new Sailun 275/70R22.5, LR H all-position tires installed on my MH for a total bill of $1,380 including balancing and all applicable taxes.
That is yet another reason re-treads are not a logical option.

Have you worn out the tires on your coach? How long did it take? Remember, the casing on a retread is probably already 2-4 years old. Add how long it took you to those numbers and if it totals more than 8, I wouldn't even consider it. Retreads work great on trailers and somewhat ok on tractor drivers in situations where the get high miles with little abuse. Anything else, avoid them. The company I work for has a policy of virgin rubber on tractors and retreads on trailers. Our trailer tires get abused and typically get punctured long before they wear out, making retreads more affordable.

Road gators everywhere here on I4 in Florida. Saw two different vehicles needing roadside service yesterday. They had hit those gators.

No way in ....... I would even consider one on my vehicle. The damage to the electronics alone after the tire shreds and eats into the cabin area is just not worth the stress.

I agree. They are "Flat tire" remnants. A flat tire, retread or otherwise, will get hot and disintegrate in short order if driven on. That being said, I'll spring for new tires when it's time.
