Any one know any thing about using re-tread tires on a motor home. I need to replace my Michelin 275 70R 22.5 tires and was wondering if any one had used re-treads and if so what brand, cost etc. was used

I've seen enough of them strewn all over the roads ( alligators ) to stay clear of ever putting them on my MH.

Well 18 wheelers use them, but I would NEVER put them on the steer axles!!!!

DOT prevents them from being used on steering axle on anything

That's against the law,,,(recaps on the steer axle) for the reason Cliff stated above... Just blew one a couple weeks ago... (not my first of course) .. You REALLY don't want those on your motor home ..... IMO...

United Parcel uses recaps except on the steer which is legal to do. Only buses are prohibited from using them on a steer axle. The quality of the casing is key in the capping process. While they do occasionally come apart, it is generally as a result of under inflation or a run flat situation. It should be noted that when they go they do a lot of damage as the cap weighs between 35 and 50 pounds depending on the tread configuration.

They do have their place but not INMHO, on a M/H.

In an attempt to avoid controversy over the use of recaps. Contained in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, page 520 in sub chapter B appendix G item 13 in the out of service criteria states, "any bus equipped with recapped or retreaded tire (s)".

Note: This does not apply to intercity buses.

If you look closer you will see that most of those alligators on the road are from new tires,not recaps. We tried recaps on the rear of the charter bus I used to drive but the ride was too rough so we went back to new.

The thing about recaps is all in the recapper, and often times, "luck of the draw". A person usually doesn't save enough money, in my opinion, to make the crap shoot portion worth risking. But, as "they" say, "To each his own", I suppose.

I've seen first hand the damage caused to big trucks when a tire blows,,, I'd hate to see what that would do to a fragile motor home...

I would never consider this. Safety is the first reason and the second reason is that when the tire fails it will destroy the side of your motor home.

Just running over one of the millions that already lie on the roads in America will cause damage.

If your talking of recapping Michelins that are 7 years or more old then no. If less in years you might check to see if they can be re-grooved.
