Recently bought 1990 w/454, lots of vacuum hoses disconnected!
A couple of months ago we bought a 1990 Fleetwood Southwind with only 26,000 miles on the 454 Chevy in it. Drove it 100 miles home and it ran perfect, I was so happy!
Anyway since we live in a San Francisco bay area county, it has to be smogged before I get current registration tags (old tags were 2012 but paid up) to legally drive. I did the one day permit to get it home but it's time to get serious and finished.
I thought that it might be a good idea to at least change the air cleaner and the engine oil. Upon looking at the engine I found a few hoses disconnected! They weren't just hanging there (well they were) but there was a screw or bolt in the end of each one to plug it off. A couple of the hoses I can see where they went but several of them I can not.
This chassis has a carbureted 454 with air pump on the engine. It doesn't have catalytic converters in the exhaust system. I've heard that it should have had EFI but the engine really looks like it came this way from the factory and the exhaust really looks stock as well, doesn't look like it's been modified or welded on.
I've done searches for the vacuum diagram online and get too many different versions. Does anyone have an idea?

In 1990 Chevy 454 were available with either a 4 barrel carb or a throttle body fuel injection. And yes, with very few changes you could switch a tbi and a carburetor. It is possible that it came with tbi and some one changed it. It been a while since I worked on a big lock, but I do remember that some of the tbi hoses went to a couple air flow sensors. The first tbi system was pretty crude and a lot of pickups had them pulled off. Guys new how to work on carburetors.
Try running your chassis vin and se what was original equipment.

Just a thought - trace the hoses back to the ports they are connected to. Buy some professional vacuum port plugs and install them. Then take it to get smogged and don't say anything.
If you don't get flagged for changing the system, then you are good to go. If you do, then the guy running the test must have something he used for a reference. That's the diagram you need.
You then run the hoses per the diagram and take it back.
With an air pump system you want to make sure the diverter valve works. That might be one of the disconnected hoses.

Not a bad idea! What exactly is the diverter valve? Is it the big thing hanging off of the back of the air pump? If so I see what looks like two hoses missing off of that!

Does Kali really require a rig that old to be smogged?..That's crazy..
I have an '88 with a 454 and it still runs sweet. 123,000 miles...50#'s oil pressure no blue smoke..Zooom-zoom..
Get it licensed up here in Washington, no problem..

Sometimes GM put vac routing diagrams on top of radiator.. so under hood.. over top of all that rubber air dam.. might be a emmision label... you are going to need it anyway.. so use cell phone with camera and flash and record through air dam over top of radiator... see if it's there..
If you go in auto parts store and grab a book for trucks.. Chevy c3500 or c2500 same yr.. 1990.. that should 90% there.. po must have just disconnected smog pump.. check it's belt.. pump could be locked up.. I would not worry.. it looks stock.. it might pass.. let them tell you.. but really if you got fresh spark plugs and wires.. and cap and rotor.. you will likely pass.. and put premium gas in it.. no additives..
See what it does.. I doubt it ever had cats.. that's great.. they are added easily if needed.. only thing bothering me.. is carb looks old.. so if gets flagged.. and you have done the rest.. then look for replacement.. but truly I wish I had yours.. there is so much you can do to make it scream ..
Good luck and let us know what you did and maybe better members then me will help you.. get back to us.. like to know your experience with smog cops..
I really say nothing.. and if asked you tell the truth.. you just bought it used.. you do know what po did.. bet you pass.. they will bulk at no cats.. but it was made that way.. just say that.. you really got something there.. little cleaning and work.. you can still pass and add 200 hp.. or there abouts..

If it had air pump ,it was had a carb. Trucks were behind efi change and MHs even a bit further.
Hopefully they won't make you find stock type catalytic converter/s.
If you change plugs gap them to .045 not .060 or .090 if listed on tag it was attempt to burn cleaner they later went back .045-.050 in bulletins..There were other things like advance timing to an extent that helped the smog pump motors gain some power.

The diverter valve dumps the air from the pump into the air cleaner on decel. Supposed to reduce the chance of a backfire.

I put a total Banks System on my '88 Winnie 27 RQ Superchief...If you get your rig squared away with the government that's the way to go...The Banks does everything they advertise, at least in my case...More power-speed better mileage, such as you can do..With my Samurai following me for the past 60,000 miles, it only costs 2-3 mpg..It's swell having an older rig that still looks somewhat new and getting complements from folks with way more newer-$$$ rides...And less insurance etc..
Enjoy!..It's worth it....

1990 has the vacuum diagram affixed to the side of the air filter housing. Take a peek it may be hidden by 30 years of grime
