Darwin has it! The reason flooded cell batteries are located in an outside space with plenty of ventilation is that they emit hydrogen. Hydrogen is a fire and explosion hazard. Acid fumes and spills are a close second reason.

Hydrogen is present around flooded cell lead acid batteries when they are charging. Lots of hydrogen is around when conditioning them or overcharging them.

Any electrical switches, electrical devices, electronic devices located with flooded cell lead acid batteries should be certified as explosion proof. The Magnetec is a potential spark source that can ignite the hydrogen.

I wish you good luck and happy trails ahead!
