Replace Torque Converter

I was wondering if anyone on the site has had a torque convert replaced. I have a 2007 Southwind 32v. Local trans shop diagnosed/guessed the problem was the torque convert, but would't quote a price range. I just wanted to get an idea before it's held hostage at the trans shop.

What are the symptoms? Is it the Ford or Chevy with the allison transmission? If the allison I would take it to a allison certified shop.
I would definitely get a second opinion.

Torque converters are so well designed today that most will go from the cradle to the grave without needing service or replacement unless a transmission needs to be done... if your in that far for a transmission than usually the torque converter is done for good measure..


What usually is the cause for torque converter failure is transmission particles that are floating in the fluid that damage the bearing surfaces in both the transmission and the torque converter.. these particles are usually from overheating and sometimes lugging the transmission in the incorrect gear.. HEAT is the number 1 killer of the transmission in that the overheated oil than looses its ability to lubricate the clutch packs/bands and other moving parts... any loose material off the clutch packs/bands that are not caught by the filter continue the damage...


I've seen several quality transmission shops who always sell and install a large extra filter on the transmission cooler return line back to the transmission to catch and prevent the smaller particles from doing damage..

Not knowing the problem I will say that a torque converter failure is not very common but if it did fail the whole transmission needs to be cleaned and resealed if not overhauled.

Maybe the nuts loosened and messed up the studs and flex plate.

Shop won't give you a price range? Don't give them your business. Big red flag.

So I took it to another trans shop and this guy is 99% sure the whining sound coming from the bell housing is the converter. We'll pull the trans pan off and see if there is any shavings tomorrow. If it's full of shavings it's time to rebuild the trans. If it looks clean, probably just swap the converter and hope for the best.

Been there, done that.

Just before my 3/36 powertrain warranty was up I took my motorhome with the complaint that I could hear the torque converter locking up. I didn't describe it as a whine, but that is a pretty good description. No noise once it was fully locked though, just as it applied. Never heard any other car or truck do that.

New torque converter, dealer rebuilt the trans, and flushed the cooler. Ford paid for it under warranty. I want to say it was over $3000, but that seems cheap, maybe that was just the parts.

Trans came apart again later. My own shop found things the dealer screwed up in its rebuild. Ford warrantied the replaced parts (only) for 12,000 miles, but I was past that, and it wasn't a part problem anyway, just assembly. Been fine after that for many years now.

Good amount of metal shavings in the pan. Rebuilding the trans to be safe. Just a hair under 3000 OTD with a 24 month, 24k mile warranty.

That sounds very reasonable. You still have never mentioned if it was a Ford transmission, GM or Allison.


Could you be more specific, please?

Ford? E4OD? TorqShift 5 speed or 6 speed?


GM 4L80E, 4L85E?


Allison 1000 series, 5 or 6 speed?

WALK away any shop that can not provide a quote is looking for you to pay their kids college bills.
